Liberty Architecture at Venice’s Lido: all the buildings in the internet

liberty

A CD and web catalogue of Lido’s architecture, one of Venice islands, rich in beaches, tree-lined avenues and seaside cafes, setting for the International Film Festival and other events at international level. At the end of the 19th century, the Lido invented the so-called ‘beach tourism’, becoming a holiday destination for the international high society and gaining the nickname of Golden Island.

A good aesthetic taste and a deep-rooted vocation of its inhabitants to preserve its heritage characterised by high quality of life saved it from the depersonalization due to tourism that affected other seaside resorts.
Therefore the island is a nice and liveable site, heritage for its inhabitants, full of elegant Liberty style villas, although it does not lack interesting examples of rationalist and 1950s architecture.
The Lido-Pellestrina municipality realized a catalogue including more than 250 buildings – fruit of 4-year work and cooperation with different local realities – that can be totally available on the Web. This ambitious project rises from the understanding that the numerous and significant architectural examples found in Venice’s Lido really are part of our country’s most important heritage.
Nowadays the island is experiencing a favourable moment thanks to remarkable interventions of strategic planning – focussed on the construction of the new Cinema and Congress Palace – aimed at enhancing Lido’s specific characteristics and leading to a full realization of its local vocation.
Anyone can consult the catalogue.
