Venice: Wireless Summer on the beach

Web 2.0, blogs, new technologies, info and innovative tourism: a wireless summer in Venice.

Spiagge Online

Low cost wireless connections from the beach: Michele Vianello, vice mayor of Venice, introduces the project ‘Online Beach‘: a broadband wireless connection system for the beach in Lido.

Venice Council is readying the wireless connection system along the Lido coastline where the beach resorts run by Venezia Spiagge are located: the system will be also available for the private beach resorts and hotels which may want to activate it, and will be running from the opening of the summer season.

‘Online Beach’ represents a further step of the Venice Connected project, which aims at the total wireless connection of the city of Venice within Spring 2009. A fully 2.0 project, since it will be the user to choose the contents he is interested in.

The wireless connection will be compatible with laptops, palms and wi-fi smartphones: paying with the cabana fee the management will give each customer a password to access to the broadband. An extra account will cost 3 euro only.

A second phase of Online Beach will begin in August with the opening of the Cinema Festival: the system will allow users to also book various services, check e-mails, update blogs and to be informed about all the Festival news.

The project aims to grant citizens a free online connection and to guarantee tourists a cheaper online booking service.

Venice Connected will play a main role in the city of Venice participation to 2010 Shanghai Expo, declared Massimo Cacciari, mayor of Venice, stating that it will help organize and improve the tourism system as well, as mobility, commerce and city planning.
