The new project of Joseph Akel, opening on Saturday 15 at Associazione Culturale Spiazzi, will show two series of photographs, titled: American Magic and Dread and Nocturne.
In this series, the young artist - grew up between New Zealand and the US - investigates notions of temporality and human nature through his exploration of the American West and now, Venice. The two different locations share several similarities: they are both romanticized destinations and symbolic places.
Akel doesn’t give us just postcard images, but he tries to show us a new way of looking at these locations. The concept of temporality is important because it drives us to consider what causes destruction or obsolescence of these places.
