Biennale Theatre: An international theatre workshop at the Venice International University, 3-7 November 2008
Theatre 3 > 7 november 2008

An intercultural theatre workshop, involving students from all over the world, is the result of the collaboration between Mediterraneo, the International Theatre Workshop of the Venice Biennale, run by Maurizio Scaparro, and Venice International University, based on the San Servolo island.
The workshop will offer a 15-hour programme with acting, voice, recitation and theatrical improvisation lessons. At the end, students (from all universities collaborating with VIU, thus also Ca’Foscari and IUAV) will receive a certificate of participation, issued by the Venice Biennale and the Venice International University together.

“Ciao” comes from the Venetian word “s-ciao” that means “schiavo”, slave (I am so close to you that I feel I am your slave). The word in fact refers to the word ‘slavo’ and testifies the first important sale of Slavic slaves, which took place in Germany during the 10th and 11th centuries. This word now expressing affection has absorbed and eliminated a more cynical and hierarchical dimension: it has radically transformed its antique content. The case of ‘ciao’ is just an example because, in every situation, nouns and names, adjectives and verbs (and adverbs, locutions, interjections) betray borrowings and contaminations, changes in the meaning and significance that a more careful reading can unveil and highlight. In its stratifications, the linguistic analysis can disclose historical events, cultural correspondences and interactions between territories, serving as a litmus test for political, economic, sociological and artistic analysis. (Corrado Veneziano)
This workshop, intended for the students of the Venice International University coming from Europe, Asia and America, represents the opportunity “to understand and analyze, to get to know oneself and the others, to criticize stereotypes and prejudices”, an opportunity to rethink one’s own ideas, to have debates, to consider and discover cultural differences, carrying on a dialogue, in an intelligent, creative and playful way, not only with the Balkan culture but with all the various cultures of the participants.
VIU students will shoot a video about the Workshop development, which will be then shown on the 18th of December during the ceremony for the end of the semester.
The Venice International University is an international centre for research and higher education, which has among its members 10 universities, located in Europe, America, Israel, China and Japan, the province of Venice, the CNR (Italian National Research Council), the Foundation of Venice and the Ministry for the Environment and Territory.
VIU research activity is focused on competence, environment and subsidiarity. Its latest projects brought to the island the world of creativity, art and design.
Corrado Veneziano works as professor and essayist, applies research results and fundamentals of the linguistic field to acting and film direction. He also collaborates with various foreign and Italian universities. A TV series on the teaching of the Italian language, which he has written and directed, has recently been put on air by Rai 3.
Mediterraneo, the International Theatre Workshop of the Venice Biennale, which will take place between 27th October and 29th November 2008 in Venice, will follow a path that starting from our literary and cultural origins leads to the most touching situations of our contemporary history.
