The 53rd International Festival of Contemporary Music is titled The Body of Sound and will run in Venice 25th September to 3rd October 2009. 9 days of concerts, installations, meetings and workshops: the Biennale Musica, directed by Luca Francesconi, wants to be a place where different musical languages meet, and where a critical comparison with significant experiences of the recent past is made.

Seventy-three composers from around the world – the U.S., Japan, Germany, Sweden, Russia, Norway, Greece, Belgium, Switzerland, Serbia, Chile, France, Spain, and Italy – for 87 performances, with 26 Italian premieres and 16 world premieres. A series of concerts, installations, meetings, workshops, conferences and other events making up the 53rd International Festival of Contemporary Music of the Venice Biennale, chaired by Paolo Baratta, to be held in Venice from 25th September to 3rd October 2009.

Convinced that “the present listens to the past and looks to the future”, Luca Francesconi is creating a Festival that seeks connections between different generations, tracing a path between past and present. After last year’s edition, dedicated to searching for our roots to shed some light on the present day, the 53rd Festival narrows its scope to The Body of Sound. The body returns to centre stage in both the man-machine relationship and in the relationship with tradition.
