Mediterraneo, 40. Festival Internazionale del Teatro della Biennale di Venezia
Theatre, from 20.02.2009 until 08.03.2009

The 40th International Theatre Festival runs 20th February to 8th March.
The program of the Festival, directed by Maurizio Scaparro, is dedicated to the theme of the Mediterranean. The Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be awarded to Irene Papas on Friday 20th February at the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale. This will be followed by the double opening of the Festival at the Teatro Goldoni in Venice and the Teatro Toniolo in Mestre.
Many of the performances of the Festival are the result of the first part of the Mediterraneo project, the International Theatre Workshop, which for the entire month of November 2008 produced a series of “art construction sites”, where Masters of the stage and important figures in international thought met with students, student actors, and scholars interested in a better insight into the processes of creating theatre to make it a tool for understanding and coexistence.
The performances of the 40th International Theatre Festival will take place in many venues throughout the city of Venice, involving Mestre, Marghera and Treviso: from the historic theatres – Goldoni and Malibran – to the contemporary venues in the city – the Teatro Fondamenta Nuove – to the university theatres - Teatro Giovanni Poli Santa Marta; from the venues of the Biennale at the Arsenale with the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale to the Teatro Toniolo in Mestre and the Teatro Aurora in Marghera.
