Out There. Architecture Beyond Building.
On 11th September there is the vernissage of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition, with venues at the Arsenale, at the Giardini and around the city.
The Exhibition, directed by Aaron Betsky, will present site specific installations, exhibits, events and performances.
According to Betsky, “architecture is not ‘building’. It is instead the way one thinks and talks about buildings. It is a way of representing, giving shape and maybe also offering crucial alternatives to human environment. Actually, architecture is something that makes us feel ‘at home’ around the world.”
“We need icons, enigma, experiments, some temporary structures”, says Betsky in order to think logically, to create an architecture that creates problems, instead of solving them, by highlighting and classifying them. We need an architecture that questions reality. This is the challenge of the 11th International Architecture Exhibition: to seek to collect and encourage experimentation: Such experimentation can take the form of ephemeral structures, visions of other worlds or tangible evidence of a better world.
Betsky concludes with these words: “Truly there is a secret history of architecture, characterised by a stream of styles and by the quirks of technological perfection, which has used these precise elements to conceive another architecture: along this tradition the 11th International Architecture Exhibition develops its line.”
The Corderie in the Arsenale will open with the presentation of Hall of Fragments: an architecture that comes before building, through science fiction movies that in the past showed how our world would be like nowadays, and historical movies that have recreated ancient worlds. The Corderie present Manifestos, video and printed declarations of intent claiming an architecture beyond building, and Installations, site specific and very large installations to wonder on how we can feel “at home” in the world.
The Artiglierie of Arsenale will present Uneternal City and the projects of the online competition for university students Everyville 2008. Communities beyond Place. Civic consciousness beyond Architecture.
the Padiglione Italia at the Giardini will present Experimental Architecture,a collection of architectural models beyond buildind, together with the individual works of those who based their work on experimental architecture: Frank Gehry, Herzog & de Meuron, Morphosis, Madelon Vriesendorp, Zaha Hadid e Coop Himmelb(l)au.
Upload city, on the mezzanine floor of Padiglione Italia, will present experimental architecture produced by (or for) the next generation thanks to videos downloaded from YouTube, and similar sources, as well as a number of music video.
