Industrial tourism in Venice: New itineraries to be discovered. New routes in Porto Marghera

Itineraries, until 27.03.09

The industrial area of Venice, created at the beginning of 20th century as an extension of the Venice port area for maritime trade as well as oil and coal processing,  is one of the largest in Europe: a highly important centre for the production of oil, metal and chemical products and a logistics centre.

The first thermoelectric power station was built in 1926. It covers a surface of 1,400 hectares, overlooking the lagoon in front of Venice, and represents an overwhelming experience thanks to its industrial archaeology cathedrals: imposing rationalistic structures, huge gutted sheds, enormous steam turbines, historical power stations, cooling towers. At dusk, the area looks like a space station surrounded by thousand of small lights and the torches on the smokestacks’ tops.
The VEGA center, Venice Gateway for Science and Technology, represents the most important step towards the transformation of Porto Marghera in favour of new sectors characterized by cutting-edge technologies and a low environmental impact, such as Cultural heritage studies, ICT and digital media, Nanotechnologies and Aerospace.

The new routes in Porto Marghera consist of a series of free guided itineraries organized by Vega through the most exciting spots, allowing you to discover these areas, usually inaccessible, in a safe way, providing amazing panoramas from special points of view.

Thanks to 14 scheduled itineraries the visitor will be guided  through innovative research techniques and technologies, new projects, industrial heritage and urban transformation along a special route aimed at increasing knowledge of the history, the present situation and the future opportunities of this area.

All itineraries are free and open to citizens, cultural associations and students.
