Welcome November! For Venetians, this is a vibrant month of exhibitions, theatrical performances, meetings, music festivals (Veneto Jazz, the Biennale’s Electronic Music Meeting, and Musicafoscari), traditional celebrations such as the Feast of Madonna della Salute, and the highly anticipated finissage of the Venice Biennale, which includes three days (November 22-24) of conversations, performances, and debates. Here is our first program of events to welcome autumn with energy.
We have chosen to begin with one of the most culturally and emotionally significant events: Orestea by the Anagoor company, Silver Lion at the Venice Biennale, opening the season of a Teatro Goldoni that has fully returned to being the theater of Venice with shows, concerts, tragedies, comedies, courses, aperitifs, and activities aimed at a diverse, heterogeneous, and multicultural audience as only the Venetian public can be.

Agamemnon returns from the Trojan War, is killed by his wife Clytemnestra, and avenged by his son Orestes. Aeschylus’ Oresteia is the only trilogy to have reached us in its entirety from the 5th century BC, and the interpretation by the Anagoor company is contemporary and powerful, blending song, dance, and video on stage for a meditation on the fragility of good, on death, on the passage of time, and on the transmission of memory.

Venice Jazz Festival Fall edition
A cosmopolitan formula, composed of sounds and influences as diverse as Venice itself, for the beloved Venetian jazz festival curated by Giuseppe Mormile, the soul of Veneto Jazz. From the Nordic sounds of Swedish double bassist Lars Danielsson blending jazz, classical, and pop (November 5, Teatro La Fenice) to the world sounds of French bassist Renaud Garcia-Fons (November 6, T Fondaco dei Tedeschi, free admission upon reservation by writing to fondaco.culture@dfs.com) to the jazz club atmosphere of the evenings at the Splendid Venice Hotel (November 7 and 14, reservations gr.splendidvenice.ve@starhotels.it).

To continue living after the death of a dearly loved person, her sixteen-year-old brother, the protagonist discovers that writing is the only time machine that works. La morte bianca arrives in Italy, the novel that established Eugenia Rico as one of the major writers in Spain, earning her the Azorín Prize and the acclaim of “El País.”
Journalist, lawyer, and author of Aunque seamos malditas, Gli amanti, and Il sentiero del diavolo, among others, Eugenia Rico lives and works in Venice, where in 2018 she won the Bauer International Literary Prize at Incroci di Civiltà.
Ca’ Sagredo Hotel opens its Music Room to present her third novel translated into Italian. Joining the author are Adrián J. Sáez, Ca’ Foscari University, and Laura Scarpa, Venezia da Vivere.

“When the rocket engines ignited, the great dream of my life came true.” Samantha Cristoforetti orbited the Earth on the International Space Station for nearly seven months. Astronaut, military officer, pilot, and engineer, the first Italian woman in the crews of the European Space Agency, with the ISS Expedition 42/Expedition 43 mission in 2014-2015, she achieved the European and female record for time spent in space on a single flight (199 days). We will meet her on November 15 at Teatro Goldoni.

Concert and International Meeting of Musical and Multimedia Informatics of the Venice Biennale
Venice Arsenale (Sale d’Armi and Teatro Piccolo Arsenale)
The Venice Biennale cares deeply about young music and has created the CIMM, the Center for Musical and Multimedia Informatics under the supervision of Ivan Fedele, Director of the Music sector.
CIMM
An infrastructure intended for permanent research and experimentation activities, practice, and laboratory work, useful to all artistic sectors of the Biennale and to Biennale College projects, located at two city hubs: at the Sale d’Armi of the Venice Arsenale, a hub dedicated to artistic research activities, and in Mestre at the Centro Civico and Teatro della Bissuola, for electronic music research activities dedicated to local musicians and young people, with the assistance of tutors.
With the creation of this structure aimed at fostering the creativity of young people through the organization of both basic and advanced educational laboratory activities intended for students of all school levels, the Biennale has implemented a major urban and social regeneration project. The Meeting
From November 11 to 16, the first cycle of theoretical-practical Masterclasses on the new frontiers of electronic music kicks off the first International Meeting of Musical and Multimedia Informatics with sessions open to the public every morning and laboratory moments in the afternoon. Read more.
The concert
Sunday, November 17 at 4:30 PM, the Meeting concludes with a concert at the Teatro Piccolo Arsenale on the “music of the future”: instrumental music, electronics, video, new sounds, and new performance techniques. Among the performers of international standing are flutist Ayako Okubo, Paetzold flute specialist Ulrike Mayer Spohn, tenor and countertenor Javier Hagen, Enzo Filippetti on saxophone, but also Windback performer Raphael Siefert for the videos and Andrew Quinn who will interact visually with the scores (sound reactive visuals).

Musicafoscari 2019
Ca’ Foscari University of Venice presents the new concert season of Musicafoscari 2019, a project born in 2010 with the aim of offering students a cultural experience and practical sharing of current musical languages through improvisation and collective composition workshops.
The 2019 season continues the line of research on open relationships between composition and improvisation, instrumental techniques, word, voice, and image, developed since the 1960s and updated to the current context.
The next appointments will be Thursday, November 14 with James Brandon Lewis and poet Thomas Sayers Ellis, Sunday, November 17 with Ned Rothenberg, and Thursday, November 28 with Daniele Roccato and the workshop students.
Musicafoscari concludes on Saturday, December 14 with the first musical ‘translation’ of the book Contemplazioni by Arturo Martini, with Giorgio Agamben and Nico Stringa, followed by music by Steve Reich (Proverb) and Cornelius Cardew (The Great Learning) (Vocal Group and Choir of Ca’ Foscari University Venice).
