Engaging with history, space, light and materials. Carlo Scarpa’s Correr 1953-1960 at the Museo Correr in Piazza San Marco
From May 1 to October 19, 2025, the Museo Correr hosts the exhibition Carlo Scarpa’s Correr 1953–1960, an opportunity to rediscover a museographic intervention by the master of twentieth-century architecture who combined craftsmanship and experimentation, leaving a unique mark on international architectural culture.
In the 1950s, Carlo Scarpa was commissioned to redesign the exhibition spaces of the Museo Correr. Between 1952 and 1953, he worked on the Venetian History rooms on the first floor, while between 1959 and 1960 he focused on the Picture Gallery on the second floor. The project, an Italian expression of international Rationalism, profoundly influenced the history of Italian museum design.
Unmistakable in the great architect’s projects are the attention to architectural context and the exhibition solutions that combine functionality and aesthetic sensitivity to enhance each work, as evidenced in period photographs and the original examples of Scarpian design featured in the exhibition: display cases, showcases, supports and the celebrated painting “easel,” creations of exceptional craftsmanship.
The exhibition is curated by Chiara Squarcina and Andrea Bellieni and is open daily from 10 AM to 6 PM (last entry at 5 PM) with the museum ticket.
After the visit, it will be possible to continue exploring Carlo Scarpa’s Venice at the nearby Negozio Olivetti in Piazza San Marco, in the spaces of the Fondazione Querini Stampalia, in the interiors of the Fondazione Masieri, home of the Galerie Negropontes, and at the San Sebastiano campus of Ca’ Foscari University, which reopens the entire building after a major renovation.
