Join us on June 7 and 8 in Venice for the Ocean Literacy World Conference and numerous public initiatives promoted by the Prada Group in collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission
On June 7 and 8, 2024, as part of the SEA BEYOND educational program, the Prada Group and UNESCO will host the Ocean Literacy World Conference in Venice, under the patronage of the City of Venice and the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
150 ocean literacy experts and delegates from UNESCO Member States will meet at Ca’ Giustinian, headquarters of La Biennale di Venezia, to define a common path aimed at including ocean education in school curricula, formulating policies and strategies that integrate ocean literacy into the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030), and drafting the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy, a collective document containing concrete recommendations for all UN Member States.
The event represents an important milestone ahead of the third United Nations Ocean Conference, co-hosted by the governments of France and Costa Rica, which will take place in Nice, France, in June 2025.

Friday, June 7, will conclude with a presentation and the public screening at Cinema Rossini of the premiere of the documentary Kindergarten of the Lagoon (L’Asilo della Laguna).

The documentary will be introduced by Lorenzo Bertelli, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility at the Prada Group, Francesca Santoro, UNESCO-IOC Senior Programme Officer, and moderated by SKY journalist Daniele Moretti.
It tells the story of a Venetian school involved in the project which, now in its second edition, aims to help preschool children create a bond with the lagoon ecosystem through the principles of outdoor education.

The second day will open with the presentation and proclamation of the Venice Declaration for Ocean Literacy, followed by a morning session dedicated to the SEA BEYONDers, ambassadors and friends of SEA BEYOND, who will share their experiences and connection with the sea.
On this occasion, the first SEA BEYOND Ideas Box will be presented: a multimedia center designed by French designer Philippe Starck for the NGO Bibliothèques Sans Frontières (Libraries Without Borders), with the aim of facilitating access to culture, education, and information for vulnerable communities.
Philippe Starck and Patrick Weil, President of Bibliothèques Sans Frontières, will present the innovative multimedia center during a dedicated conversation.
From 2:30 PM, Ca’ Giustinian will open its doors to the public. Children and young people in Venice will be able to experience the SEA BEYOND Ideas Box firsthand: UNESCO and Bibliothèques Sans Frontières educators, together with the SEA BEYONDers, will guide young guests in discovering the Ideas Box and organize themed workshops related to the marine world for them.
