Throughout the day the most majestic church in the city is open without interruption, and to facilitate the pilgrimage, a votive bridge, connecting the two banks, will be built on the Grand Canal. The bridge will remain open, with no interruptions, until 6:00 am on Friday 22nd November.

The recurrence originates from the great plague epidemic that struck Northern Italy between the years 1630 and 1631. On 22nd October 1630 the Doge of Venice vowed to build a grandiose and solemn votive temple if the city had survived the disease. A few weeks later the epidemic had a sharp slowdown and then regressed until it ended in November 1631. The government then decreed that every year, as a sign of gratitude, the procession in honour of the Madonna, which since then took the name of the “Salute (=health)”, had to be repeated every year.
