Festival director <strong>Alberto Barbera<\/strong> describes her as an &#8220;<em>independent and nonconformist<\/em>&#8221; woman who &#8220;<em>created her own production company and went on strike to renegotiate a salary much lower than that of her male partners<\/em>&#8220;. <\/p>\n<p>The actress, in accepting the award proposal, stated: &#8220;<em>I am deeply moved to receive the prestigious Golden Lion award from such a respected film festival. To be recognized for the body of my work at this time in my life is a dream come true. I will treasure every moment spent in Venice. It will fill my heart with joy<\/em>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Out of competition, at the end of the awards ceremony, the documentary <strong><em>Kim Novak&#8217;s Vertigo<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Alexandre O. Her first work, <em>The World to Come<\/em>, was also presented in competition in Venice. In fact, her connection with the Venice festival is much closer, having co-written all the films of her husband <strong>Brady Corbet<\/strong>, many of which were awarded at the Lido, and receiving an Oscar nomination for the screenplay of <em>The Brutalist<\/em>, presented in Venice last year and awarded the Silver Lion.  <\/p>\n<p>Like the previous film, <em>The Testament of Ann Lee<\/em> is also a period film, inspired by the life of Ann Lee, a preacher first in Great Britain and then in the United States, founder of the Shakers, a radical religious movement born at the end of the 18th century.<\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">The film stars <strong>Amanda Seyfried<\/strong> (Ann Lee), <strong>Thomasin McKenzie<\/strong>, <strong>Lewis Pullman<\/strong>, <strong>Stacy Martin<\/strong>, and <strong>Tim Blake Nelson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The second competition film of the day is  <strong><em>The Smashing Machine<\/em><\/strong>  by  <strong>Benny Safdie<\/strong>, the story of wrestler Mark Kerr, a legend of mixed martial arts and the Ultimate Fighting Championship.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>His strength also manifested outside the ring, because he had a unique ability to express emotions<\/em>&#8221; states the young director. The champion is played by <strong>Dwayne Johnson<\/strong>, also known by the pseudonym <strong>The Rock<\/strong>, who reunites with British actress <strong>Emily Blunt<\/strong>, after the success of the Disney+ film <em>Jungle Cruise<\/em>. <\/p>\n<h3>Marco Bellocchio recounts the drama of Enzo Tortora<\/h3>\n<p>1982: television host <strong>Enzo Tortora<\/strong> is at the height of success. He hosts <em>Portobello<\/em> and reaches 28 million viewers in prime time. The entire country hums the show&#8217;s theme song and waits to see if a contestant will manage to make the parrot, the show&#8217;s guest of honor, speak. When an informant from the Nuova Camorra Organizzata names him and on June 17, 1983, the carabinieri knock on his hotel room door, Tortora thinks it&#8217;s a mistake, but it&#8217;s only the beginning of an odyssey that will drag him from the peak to the abyss.   <\/p>\n<p>After recounting the drama of <strong>Aldo Moro<\/strong>, director <strong>Marco Bellocchio<\/strong> in the TV series <strong><em>Portobello<\/em><\/strong> (HBO\/RAI Fiction) recounts one of the most sensational Italian judicial errors. The first two episodes are presented out of competition in Venice today. <\/p>\n<p>Director <strong>Hagai Levi<\/strong> (<em>Scenes from a Marriage<\/em>) also tackles a TV series, <strong><em>Etty<\/em><\/strong> with <strong>Julia Windischbauer<\/strong> and <strong>Sebastian Koch<\/strong>, of which the first three episodes are presented.<\/p>\n<p>The series, which tells the story of a Jewish woman during the Nazi occupation of Amsterdam, is based on the diaries and letters of Etty Hillesum.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rgg-container\" data-rgg-id=\"6\">    <div class=\"rgg-imagegrid captions-overlay-hover-show captions-effect-slide_up \" data-rgg-id=\"6\">\n                    <a  title=\"\" data-caption=\"\" class=\" size-full rgg-img\" data-ratio=\"0.66625\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rgg-tile-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veneziadavivere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ph.-Rossana-Viola-Jim-Jarmusch-Mostra-del-Cinema-Venezia-2025.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>            <\/a>\n                    <a  title=\"\" data-caption=\"\" class=\" size-full rgg-img\" data-ratio=\"0.66625\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rgg-tile-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veneziadavivere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ph.-Rossana-Viola-Jude-Law-Mostra-del-Cinema-Venezia-2025.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 533px) 100vw, 533px\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>            <\/a>\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>The return of Matador, by Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/h3>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Today we will speak of the art of killing the bull. It is not enough to face it well, one must kill it well, because to kill it badly is an infamy&#8230;<\/em>&#8221; Thus begins one of <strong>Pedro Almod\u00f3var<\/strong>&#8216;s early films, <strong><em>Matador<\/em><\/strong> from 1986, with a close and intense close-up of a young and sensual <strong>Antonio Banderas<\/strong>, twenty-six at the time.<\/p>\n<p>The fifth feature film by the Madrid-born director, it is part of the filmography that precedes the great international success of <em>Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown<\/em>, which was presented in competition in Venice in 1988.<\/p>\n<p>The film is perhaps one of the most abstract in Almod\u00f3var&#8217;s early production. It addresses the theme of death, in particular, as the supreme act of freedom, in the face of the inevitable decay of beauty and passion, imposed by social conventions. <\/p>\n<p>The cinematography by <strong>\u00c1ngel Luis Fern\u00e1ndez<\/strong> is characterized by &#8220;chromatic excesses&#8221; that the director had suggested, asking to be inspired by other works marked by the passion-death binomial. Those reds and blacks will shine again on the big screen, thanks to the restoration carried out by Video Mercury Films. In the film, in addition to Banderas, <strong>Assumpta Serna<\/strong>, <strong>Nacho Mart\u00ednez<\/strong>, <strong>Eva Cobo<\/strong>, <strong>Julieta Serrano<\/strong>, <strong>Chus Lampreave<\/strong>, <strong>Carmen Maura<\/strong> (the only one from the cast in Venice this year), and <strong>Eusebio Poncela<\/strong>.  <\/p>\n<p>The other two films of the day for <strong>Venice Classics<\/strong> are <em><strong>Kagi <\/strong>(<strong>The Key<\/strong>)<\/em> by Japanese director <strong>Kon Ichikawa<\/strong> from 1959 and the experimental film on the visual and television representation of the Holocaust <strong><em>Holofiction<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Michal Kosakowski<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"rgg-container\" data-rgg-id=\"8\">    <div class=\"rgg-imagegrid captions-overlay-hover-show captions-effect-slide_up \" data-rgg-id=\"8\">\n                    <a  title=\"\" data-caption=\"\" class=\" size-full rgg-img\" data-ratio=\"1.6\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rgg-tile-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veneziadavivere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ph.-Rossana-Viola-Jude-Law-Mostra-del-Cinema-Venezia-2025-1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>            <\/a>\n                    <a  title=\"\" data-caption=\"\" class=\" size-full rgg-img\" data-ratio=\"1.6\">\n                <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"rgg-tile-img\" src=\"https:\/\/www.veneziadavivere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/ph.-Rossana-Viola-Mostra-del-Cinema-Venezia-2025.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" \/>            <\/a>\n            <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3>All the films from the other sections<\/h3>\n<p>Out of competition <strong><em>Orfeo<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Virgilio Villoresi<\/strong> with <strong>Luca Vergoni<\/strong>, <strong>Giulia Maenza<\/strong>, <strong>Aomi Muyock<\/strong>, <strong>Vinicio Marchioni<\/strong>. <strong>Inspired by <em>Poema a fumetti<\/em> by Dino Buzzati<\/strong>, it is a work that merges different forms of language, between artisanal animation, experimental cinema, and optical techniques, in a symbolic and sensory narrative.   <\/p>\n<p class=\"whitespace-normal break-words\">Also out of competition, the three short films <strong><em>Boomerang Atomic<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Rachid Bouchareb<\/strong>, <strong><em>How to shoot a ghost<\/em> <\/strong>by <strong>Charlie Kaufman<\/strong>, and <strong><em>Goffredo felicissimo?<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Franco Maresco<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Two films in competition in the <strong>Horizons<\/strong> section: <strong><em>Songs of Forgotten Trees<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Anuparna Roy<\/strong>, a female drama set in present-day Mumbai, and <em><strong>Har\u00e0 Watan <\/strong>(<strong>Lost land<\/strong>)<\/em> by <strong>Akio Fujimoto<\/strong>, a dangerous journey of two children from the Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh to Malaysia. <\/p>\n<p>For <strong>Venice Spotlight<\/strong>, <em><strong>\u00c0 bras-le-corps <\/strong>(<strong>Silent Rebellion<\/strong>)<\/em> by <strong>Marie-Elsa Sgualdo<\/strong> will be presented, the story of a woman&#8217;s determination after becoming pregnant following a rape.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Venice Days<\/strong> presents the Iranian film <strong><em>Past Future Continuous<\/em> <\/strong>by <strong>Morteza Ahmadvand<\/strong> and <strong>Firouzeh Khosrovani<\/strong> and <strong><em>Memory of Princess Mumbi<\/em> <\/strong>by <strong>Damien Hauser<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>For <strong>the International Critics&#8217; Week<\/strong>, the short film <em><strong>Sante<\/strong> (<strong>Saints<\/strong>)<\/em> by <strong>Valeria Gaudieri<\/strong> and the feature film <strong><em>Roqia<\/em><\/strong> by <strong>Yanis Koussim<\/strong> will be presented.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, a <strong>Special Event<\/strong> will be the screening in Sala Giardino, at 7 PM, of <strong><em>(Im)perfetta<\/em><\/strong>, the short film by <strong>Francesca Michielin<\/strong> and <strong>Valeria Solarino<\/strong>, on identity and insecurities.
