Everything about the Lions of the 80th Venice International Film Festival: Poor Things by Yorgos Lanthimos wins, thanks to an extraordinary Emma Stone. On the podium are Japanese master Hamaguchi and the migrant stories of Io Capitano and Green Border <\/h2>\n

The final day of the 80th Venice International Film Festival. Anticipation is high to discover the winners. On the red carpet, numerous young fans call out the names of directors and actors as they parade past, trying to identify the potential winners. In the press room, the atmosphere is one of frantic expectation. <\/p>\n

Predictions are being ventured, and the atmosphere is akin to a stadium. On the final red carpet, the members of the jury parade by. Damien Chazelle<\/strong> signs a few autographs. Tiziana Rocca and Alba Parietti arrive, the latter in a red dress. Various delegations arrive: Michel Franco<\/strong> with Sarsgaard<\/strong> and Gyllenhaal<\/strong>, who stop to pose for photographers. Matteo Garrone<\/strong>, Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong>, Claudia Gerini<\/strong>, and many others arrive. <\/p>\n

The Venezia80 jury, led by the director of La La Land<\/em> and Babylon<\/em>, Damien Chazelle, has assigned the following awards to the films in Competition: <\/p>\n

– Golden Lion<\/strong> for Best Film to Poor Things<\/em> by Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong>
\n– Silver Lion – Grand Jury Prize<\/strong> to the Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi<\/strong> for Evil Does Not Exist<\/em>
\n– Silver Lion – Award for Best Director<\/strong> to Matteo Garrone<\/strong> for Io Capitano<\/em>
\n– Special Jury Prize<\/strong> to Green Border<\/em> by the Polish director Agnieszka Holland<\/strong>
\n– Volpi Cup for Best Actress<\/strong> to Cailee Spaeny<\/strong> for Priscilla<\/em> by Sofia Coppola<\/strong>
\n– Volpi Cup for Best Actor<\/strong> to Peter Sarsgaard<\/strong> for Memory<\/em> by Michel Franco<\/strong>
\n– Award for Best Screenplay<\/strong> to Guillermo Calder\u00f3n<\/strong> and Pablo Larra\u00edn<\/strong> for El Conde<\/em>
\n– Marcello Mastroianni Award<\/strong> for Best Young Actor or Actress<\/strong> to Seydou Sarr<\/strong> for Io Capitano<\/em> (the actor gave a moving speech that touched everyone present) <\/p>\n

The Orizzonti section<\/h3>\n

The Orizzonti section Jury, led by Italian director Jonas Carpignano<\/strong>, has assigned the following awards: <\/p>\n

– Orizzonti Award for Best Film<\/strong> to Explanation for Everything<\/em> by the Hungarian director G\u00e1bor Reisz <\/strong>
\n– Orizzonti Award for Best Director<\/strong> to Mika Gustafson<\/strong> for the film Paradise Is Burning<\/em>
\n– Orizzonti Special Jury Prize<\/strong> to Una sterminata domenica<\/em>, the debut work of Alain Parroni<\/strong>
\n– Orizzonti Award for Best Actress<\/strong> to Margarita Rosa De Francisco<\/strong> for the film El Para\u00edso<\/em>
\n– Orizzonti Award for Best Actor<\/strong> to Tergel Bold-Erdene<\/strong> for the film Ser ser salhi (City of Wind)<\/em>
\n– Orizzonti Award for Best Screenplay<\/strong> to Enrico Maria Artale<\/strong> for the film El Para\u00edso<\/em>
\n– Orizzonti Award for Best Short Film<\/strong> to Erenik Beqiri<\/strong> for A Short Trip<\/em><\/p>\n

The other sections<\/h3>\n

The Armani Beauty Audience Award<\/strong> for the Orizzonti Extra section goes to Felicit\u00e0<\/em>, the debut work of Micaela Ramazzotti<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

For Venice Classics<\/strong>, the award for Best Restored Film goes to the Japanese film Ohikkoshi (Moving)<\/em> by Shinji Somai<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Award for Best Documentary<\/strong> goes to Thank You Very Much<\/em> by Alex Braverman<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Among the virtual reality works: the Venice Immersive Achievement Award<\/strong> is won by Empereur<\/em> by Marion Burger<\/strong> and Ilan Cohen<\/strong>; the Special Jury Prize<\/strong> goes to Flow<\/em> by Adriaan Lockman<\/strong>. Finally, the Venice Immersive Grand Prize<\/strong> goes to Songs for a Passerby<\/em> by Celine Daemen<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

The Lion of the Future and the Lifetime Achievement Lions<\/h3>\n

The international Jury of the \u201cLuigi De Laurentiis\u201d Venice Award for a Debut Film<\/strong>, led by French director Alice Diop<\/strong>\u2014winner of this same award and the Silver Lion last year\u2014has assigned the Lion of the Future \u2013 \u201cLuigi De Laurentiis\u201d Venice Award for a Debut Film, and a prize of 100,000 USD provided by Filmauro (presented by Claudia Gerini), to Love Is a Gun<\/em> by Lee Hong-Chi<\/strong>, screened in the International Critics’ Week.<\/p>\n

The young Chinese director gave special thanks to his wife, who encouraged him to share this film with the world.<\/p>\n

During the Festival, the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement<\/strong> had already been awarded to director Liliana Cavani<\/strong> and actor Tony Leung Chiu-wai<\/strong>, as well as the Cartier Glory to the Filmmaker Award<\/strong> to the American director, screenwriter, and producer Wes Anderson<\/strong> (The French Dispatch, Grand Budapest Hotel, The Royal Tenenbaums<\/em>).<\/p>\n

Finally, the Campari Passion for Film 2023 Award<\/strong> was presented to the production designer Tonino Zera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The Collateral Awards<\/h3>\n

The winner of the 38th International Critics’ Week<\/strong> is Malqueridas<\/em> by Tana Gilbert<\/strong>, which also won the Mario Serandrei \u2013 Hotel Saturnia Award<\/strong> for Best Technical Contribution.<\/p>\n

The Audience Award<\/strong> went to Hoard<\/em> by Luna Carmoon<\/strong>, which also won the Verona Film Club Award<\/strong> for the most innovative film.<\/p>\n

For the SIC@SIC (Short Italian Cinema at the International Critics’ Week) short film showcase, the awarded films were Las memorias perdidas de los \u00e1rboles<\/em> by Antonio La Camera<\/strong> (Best Film), La linea del terminatore<\/em> by Gabriele Biasi<\/strong>, and the delightful and funny We Should All Be Futurists<\/em> by Angela Norelli<\/strong> (Best Technical Contribution).<\/p>\n

Three films were awarded within the Giornate degli Autori (Venice Days):<\/p>\n

– GDA Director\u2019s Award<\/strong>: goes to Vampire humaniste cherche suicidant consentant<\/em> by Ariane Louis-Seize<\/strong>
\n– Europa Cinemas Label Award<\/strong> to Photophobia<\/em> by Ivan Ostrochovsk\u00fd <\/strong>and Pavol Pekarc\u00edk <\/strong>
\n– Audience Award<\/strong> to Quitter la nuit (Through the Night)<\/em> by Delphine Girard<\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the films in this section, the splendid Backstage<\/em> by Afef Ben Mahmoud<\/strong> and Khalil Benkirane<\/strong> also received recognition, winning the Cinema & Arts Award<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There are also many other collateral awards that, as every year, were assigned here at the Lido during the final days of the Festival. Among the films in Competition at Venezia80, the one that gathered the most recognition was Io Capitano<\/em> by Matteo Garrone<\/strong>, which collected 11 awards: CICT – UNESCO “Enrico Fulchignoni” Award, Civitas Award, Edipo Re Award, FEDIC Award, Francesco Pasinetti Award, Green Drop Award, ImpACT Award, Leoncino d\u2019Oro Award, Pellicola d\u2019Oro for Best Production Manager, SIGNIS Award, and Soundtracks Star Award for Best Soundtrack (for the music by Andrea Farri<\/strong>). <\/p>\n

Numerous recognisitions also went to Zielona Granica (Green Border)<\/em> by Agnieszka Holland<\/strong>, which collected 6 awards: the Arca Cinema Giovani Award for Best Film, the CinemaSar\u00e0 Award (from the Cineteca Italiana in Milan), the Green Drop Award, the \u201cSorriso Diverso\u201d Award for Best Foreign Film, the UNIMED Award for Cultural Diversity, and the \u201cCinema for UNICEF\u201d mention at the Leoncino D\u2019Oro awards.<\/p>\n

Other collateral awards among the films in Competition were assigned to Evil Does Not Exist<\/em> by Ryusuke Hamaguchi<\/strong> (FIPRESCI Award, Ca\u2019 Foscari Young Jury Award, FAI Foundation Award, Special Mention of the CinemaSar\u00e0 Award), Poor Things<\/em> by Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong> (UNIMED Award), Adagio<\/em> by Stefano Sollima<\/strong> (Special Soundtrack Award for the music by Subsonica), and Dogman<\/em> by Luc Besson<\/strong> (Graffetta d\u2019Oro).<\/p>\n

Among the films in the Orizzonti section, Tatami<\/em> by Guy Nattiv<\/strong> and Zar Amir Ebrahimi<\/strong> won the Brian Award from the UAAR, while the Macedonian film Domakinstvo za Pocetnici (Housekeeping for Beginners)<\/em> won the 17th edition of the Queer Lion Award. <\/p>\n

Among the Out of Competition films, Making Of<\/em> by C\u00e9dric Kahn<\/strong> won (ex aequo) the Cinema & Arts Award and a special mention from the FAI Award.<\/p>\n
