Final day of the eightieth edition of the Venice Film Festival: awaiting the winners, all the predictions from the Venezia da Vivere team<\/h2>\n

This evening at 7 PM in the Sala Grande of the Palazzo del Cinema at the Venice Lido, the awards ceremony will take place, hosted by Caterina Murino<\/strong>, with the presentation of the Golden Lion and all awards from the main section: Orizzonti, Opera Prima dedicated to “Luigi De Laurentiis,” Venezia Classici, and Venezia Immersive.<\/p>\n

The closing film<\/h3>\n

The ceremony will be followed by the screening, Out of Competition, of the closing film La sociedad de la nieve<\/em> by Juan Antonio Bayona<\/strong> with Rafael Federman<\/strong> and Esteban Bigliardi<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The film, produced by Netflix (the release date is not yet known), tells the true story of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571 which, in 1972, crashed in the Andes. Of the forty-five passengers on board, including an entire rugby team, twenty-nine people survived, who, to escape death in one of the most hostile places on the planet, were forced to resort to extreme measures. <\/p>\n

The Spanish director commented “bonds, habits, and beliefs must adapt to terrible adversity to then reveal our true nature. There, in the odyssey in the Andes, the story becomes universal, revealing who we truly are when, having reached the limit, team spirit and mutual support come to the surface, proving to be the primary means of survival<\/em>.”<\/p>\n

Collateral awards<\/h3>\n

Meanwhile, the first awards from the Collateral sections have already been presented.<\/p>\n

For the twentieth edition of Venice Days, among the ten films in Competition, the GdA Director’s Award 2023 was given to Vampire humaniste cherche suicidaire consentant<\/em>, the debut film by Ariane Louis-Seize<\/strong>, which also won the Silver Nave from the Fanheart3 association.<\/p>\n

The audience award went to Quitter la Nuit<\/em> by Delphine Girard<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The winner of the International Critics’ Week was Malqueridas<\/em> by Tana Gilbert<\/strong>, which also won the Serandrei Hotel Saturnia award for best technical contribution.<\/p>\n

The audience award went to Hoard<\/em> by Luna Carmoon<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Best short film was awarded to Las memorias perdidas de los arboles<\/em> by Antonio la Camera<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A veritable sweep of collateral awards for Io Capitano<\/em> by Matteo Garrone<\/strong>: CICT – UNESCO “Enrico Fulchignoni” Award, Civitas Award, Edipo Re Award, FEDIC Award, Francesco Pasinetti Award, ImpACT Award, Leoncino d’oro Award, Pellicola d’oro for best production director, SIGNIS Award, and Soundtracks Star Award for best soundtrack (for the music by Andrea Farri).<\/p>\n

Numerous recognitions also for Zielona Granica (Green Border)<\/em> by Agnieszka Holland<\/strong>, which won the Arca Cinema Giovani award for Best Film, the CinemaSar\u00e0 award (Cineteca italiana di Milano), the Green Drop Award, the “Sorriso Diverso” award for best foreign film, the Uninmed award for cultural diversity, and a special mention for the Leoncino D’oro award.<\/p>\n

The Cinema & Arts Award was given ex aequo to Backstage<\/em> by Afef Ben Mahmoud<\/strong>, Khalil Benkirane<\/strong> and Making of<\/em> by C\u00e9dric Kahn<\/strong>, while Tatami<\/em> by Guy Nattiv<\/strong> and Zar Amir Ebrahimi<\/strong> won the Brian award from UAAR.<\/p>\n

The Macedonian film Domakinstvo za Pocetnici (Housework for Beginners)<\/em> won the 17th edition of the Queer Lion Award.<\/p>\n

Our team’s predictions<\/h3>\n

As every year, we attempted to discuss the possible winners of this edition of the Festival, aware that tonight our predictions could be completely overturned.<\/p>\n

The film that according to most of us has a good chance of winning the Golden Lion for best film is Zielona Granica (Green Border)<\/em> by Polish director Agnieszka Holland<\/strong>. It competes with Poor Things<\/em> by Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong> and with Io Capitano<\/em> by Matteo Garrone<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

For the Silver Lion, the list of names becomes broader, including, in addition to the previous films, also Finalmente l’alba<\/em> by Saverio Costanzo<\/strong>, La b\u00eate<\/em> by Bertrand Bonello<\/strong>, Evil does not exist<\/em> by Japanese director Ryusuke Hamaguchi<\/strong>, and Priscilla<\/em> by Sofia Coppola<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Regarding the performers in the main section of the Festival, our Volpi Cup for best female performance goes almost unanimously to Emma Stone<\/strong> for Poor Things<\/em> by Yorgos Lanthimos. Among the actors, our team’s preferences go to Caleb Landry<\/strong> Jones<\/strong> for Dogman<\/em> by Luc Besson<\/strong> and Pierfrancesco Favino<\/strong>, present in both Comandante<\/em> by Edoardo De Angelis<\/strong> and in Adagio<\/em> by Stefano Sollima<\/strong>. Other possible candidates could be Bradley Cooper<\/strong> (Maestro<\/em>), Mads Mikkelsen<\/strong> (Bastarden<\/em>), and Franz Rogowski<\/strong> (Lubo<\/em>).<\/p>\n

For best film in the Orizzonti section, we have indicated Tatami by Guy Nattiv and Zar Amir Ebrahimi as the frontrunner, a small gem that we hope will also be distributed in Italy, for which an award for the performance of the protagonist, American actress Arienne Mandi<\/strong>, might also be recognized.<\/p>\n

Another film that, in our opinion, could win an award in Orizzonti, for example for best direction, is Shadow Of Fire<\/em> by master Shinya Tsukamoto<\/strong>, a film that would not have been out of place in the main section of the Festival.<\/p>\n

The award for best male performance could go to a very young actor: we greatly appreciated the performances of Do\u011fa Karaka\u015f<\/strong> (Yurt – Dormitory<\/em>), young Oga Tsukao<\/strong> (Shadow Of Fire<\/em>), and Tergel Bold-Erdene<\/strong> (S\u00e8r S\u00e8r Salhi – City of Wind<\/em>). The same actors, together with Johannes Wirix<\/strong> (Comandante<\/em>) and Seydou Sarr<\/strong> (Io capitano<\/em>), are in our opinion among the candidates for the Lion of the Future for best young actor\/actress. <\/p>\n

While we often found ourselves aligned in our predictions, this was not the case regarding more personal judgments, which greatly expanded the range of films most loved by members of our team. After all, the great variety of themes that this year’s Festival proposed offered the opportunity to resonate with very intimate and personal chords in different viewers. <\/p>\n

So our “personal” Lions, for the films that will remain in our hearts, go to Zielona Granica (Green Border)<\/em> by Polish director Agnieszka Holland<\/strong>, Poor Things<\/em> by Yorgos Lanthimos<\/strong>, Dogman<\/em> by Luc Besson<\/strong>, La b\u00eate<\/em> by Bertrand Bonello<\/strong>, Backstage<\/em> by Afef Ben Mahmoud<\/strong> and Khalil Benkirane<\/strong> (Venice Days), and Enzo Jannacci vengo anch’io<\/em> by Giorgio Verdelli<\/strong> (Out of Competition).<\/p>\n

The characters that remained in our hearts are those of Bella Baxter (Emma Stone<\/strong>), protagonist of Poor Things<\/em>, the nomad Lubo<\/em>, protagonist of the eponymous film by Giorgio Diritti<\/strong>, and Ajse Useini (Housework for Beginners<\/em>).<\/p>\n

And as the lights are about to go out on the 2023 Film Festival, and the Venice Fashion Week<\/strong><\/a> approaches, we could not help but discuss the outfits admired these days at the Lido.<\/p>\n

On the red carpet, characterized by the absence of major American stars, the most elegant were in our opinion the French actresses: the geometric simplicity of Charlotte Rampling<\/strong> in Courr\u00e8ges, the perfection of Isabelle Huppert<\/strong>, sparkling in Balenciaga, and the femininity of Alice Diop<\/strong> in a masculine Valentino suit.<\/p>\n

These divas eclipsed the excesses of influencers and celebrities, made of transparencies, glitter, or provocations, such as that of Emma Corrin<\/strong>, who appeared at the photocall in Miu Miu briefs, driving the web wild.<\/p>\n

Our “Elegance” award, however, goes to the exceptional costumes designed by Holly Waddington for the film Poor Things<\/em>, which help complete the countless facets of the bizarre character portrayed by Emma Stone.<\/p>\n
