The debate for the rebirth of Venice<\/a> continues with new interviews for #RewritingtheFuture<\/b>, the project by Venezia da Vivere and the Associazione Piazza San Marco<\/a>. “Rethinking Venice offers us the unique opportunity to emphasize not only the arts but also the importance of education in our lives<\/em>.” <\/span>The English artist Anthony Corner<\/strong>, in Venice with the exhibition Lamentation, Flux and an Empty Bladder<\/strong> in Campo Santo Stefano, begins to tell us about his vision of Venice with the end of the XXXIV Canto of Dante’s Inferno: <\/p>\n

“The guide and I by that hidden path,<\/em>
\nentered to return to the bright world;<\/em>
\nand without caring for any rest,<\/em>
\nwe climbed up, he first and I second,<\/em>
\nuntil I saw the beautiful things<\/em>
\nthat the heavens bear, through a round opening.<\/em>
\nAnd then we emerged to see the stars again.”<\/em><\/p>\n

VDV: How do you imagine Venice in the future?<\/em><\/p>\n

Venice is a city that speaks of heritage and authenticity. It is a cultural and intellectual city that has an extraordinary history and influence on the rest of the world. Now, in the wake of the tragedy of the pandemic, it has the opportunity to focus on the quality of life<\/strong>\u2014and become a place that can put Venetians and the city first\u2014with a focus on community, culture, artistic practice, and intellectual engagement<\/strong>. <\/p>\n

Over the centuries, Venice has been one of the few cities in the world where art and practicality have flourished together<\/strong>. Historically, Venice had the courage to commission artists and artisans to create wonderful objects as a mirror of society<\/strong>. Now, after the crisis the world is facing, concern about the humanity of the future is developing through various media channels and means of communication, emphasizing the importance of the quality of our lives and our community. I think this should be the core of reimagining 21st-century Venice. <\/p>\n

VDV: What can politics and citizens do for a rebirth of Venice?<\/em><\/p>\n

Venice is a demanding learning experience: we are taught painting, sculpture, architecture, nutrition, food, textiles, craftsmanship, and their place in society. It demonstrates how creativity is not limited to simple decoration and embellishment but enriches our lives. In Venice, we are also taught the relationship between man and nature<\/strong>; the very existence of the city involves a symbiotic relationship with the water\u2014in many ways, it has a unique connection with the environment. <\/p>\n

Therefore, the important questions for citizens to ask politicians in Venice may be: what can make visitors an added value? <\/strong>How can Venice’s great artistic influence be better shared? And what can be done to avoid a negative impact on the environment? <\/p>\n

Serious reflection is needed on how, using the latest technologies and social media, Venice can be connected to the rest of the world without everyone having to visit physically, thereby reducing the carbon footprint of tourists<\/strong> and their overall impact on the environment. In this regard, it could become a world leader and serve as an example for other cities. <\/p>\n

Propose a specific idea in at least one of these areas: environment, residency, work, culture, safety, tourism.<\/em><\/p>\n

Every year, Venice invites the best artists, architects, and intellectuals to showcase the uniqueness of their ideas, thoughts, and activities. They are encouraged to bring their avant-garde thinking to this ancient city<\/strong>\u2014part of this sensitivity comes from the extraordinary Biennales that pair the contemporary with the ancient. <\/p>\n

Yet, despite the best intentions, many people remain excluded who have the capacity to be more inclusive and accessible without having a further impact on the city and the environment.<\/p>\n

Recently, circumstances have dictated that people all over the world use a wide range of technologies to communicate and connect with each other. The success of this seismic shift has surprised everyone in its inclusivity, its ability to build friendships, exchange knowledge, and strengthen communities. These cultural events are truly significant as they point the way forward for the future. <\/p>\n

The specific idea is aimed at the Biennale, where national pavilions and collateral events should develop numerous educational projects that connect artists, architects, cultural operators, and critics in synergy with universities and schools around the world. Through the use of technology via online tutorials, webinars, conferences, and seminars, a plethora of international participation educational projects<\/strong> would be created. <\/p>\n

The Biennales would become global, educational, artistic, and cultural resources<\/strong> for primary and middle schools, secondary schools, up to PhD students, research students, and professionals.<\/p>\n

The goal is to create long-term partnerships that ensure Venice shared help in the effort to connect the world to its creative resources<\/strong>. People from all walks of life\u2014those educationally disadvantaged, those physically limited, and those with difficulties traveling abroad due to economic penalties\u2014would be able to share and contribute to the celebration of Venice’s arts, crafts, and intellect<\/strong> without impacting the city or polluting the environment. <\/p>\n

Venice and its lagoon would be protected and preserved, but an even greater number of spectators would be able to participate<\/strong>, engage, share, and create new expanded cultural communities.<\/p>\n

In the mud emerging from the canals or in the fog, walking along dark and narrow alleys, in the opalescent morning light reflecting on the calm surface of the lagoon, Corner has a very strong emotional connection with the city. The exhibition is an immersive experience into the inner world of the English artist. <\/p>\n
