The Biennale is Venice. A 2018 full of Architecture, Dance, Theatre, Cinema and Music<\/h2>\n

While everyone is talking about the 16th International Architecture Exhibition<\/strong> here is an overview of a year full of events with La Biennale in Venice<\/strong>; during the vernissage on May 23rd, 24th and 25th<\/strong> there will be many contaminations with Dance, Theatre, Cinema and Music.<\/p>\n

From May 26th to November 25th 2018 Freespace,<\/strong> the Architecture Bienniale of the architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara<\/strong>, will be opened to the public. The two Irish ladies have chosen to talk about the generosity and the sense of humanity that architecture considers as main topics in its agenda.<\/p>\n

Architects and curators Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara live and work in Dublin. Their studio \u2018Grafton Architects<\/strong>\u2019 won the Silver Lion Award at the 2012 Architecture Biennale with the project of the new UTEC Campus of the University of Lima in Peru.<\/p>\n

The title chosen for the Architecture Biennale 2018<\/strong> is an invitation \u2018to re-examine our way of thinking, stimulating new ways of seeing the world and inventing solutions through which architecture can provide well-being and dignity to every inhabitant of this fragile planet. Freespace embraces the freedom to imagine a free space in time and memory, connecting the past, the present and the future, building on the stratifications of our cultural heritage, linking the archaic and the contemporary\u2019.<\/p>\n

16. International Architecture Exhibition<\/strong>

Meg Stuart has received the Golden Lion Award Lifetime Achievement Award for Marie Chouinard’s Biennial Dance<\/h2>\n

From 22nd June to 1st July the 22 performances of the 12th International Festival of Modern Dance <\/strong>are on show,<\/strong> a privileged look at today\u2019s choreography that highlights the dynamics and developments of the dancers and the choreographer.<\/p>\n

\n \n \"\" <\/a>\n \n \"Biennale <\/a>\n <\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement Award winner Meg Stuart,<\/strong> leader of improvisation projects that have influenced many artists, will present the remake of Built to Last<\/strong> (2012).<\/p>\n

Deborah Hay<\/strong>, precursor of the American “counter-culture” based at the Judson Dance Theatre, deals with the perfection of the Cullbergbaletten<\/strong> dancers, the ultimate expression of the modern ballet, coming together for the show ‘Figures a Sea<\/strong>‘; the music is by another great experimenter, Laurie<\/strong> Anderson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

FLA.CO.MEN<\/strong> is the contemporary flamenco of Israel Galv\u00e1n<\/strong>; the \u2018choreographic concerts\u2019 are of Fr\u00e9d\u00e9rick Gravel<\/strong> with his collective of actors, dancers and musicians, adrenaline interpreters of the Italian premiere of \u2018Some Hope for the Bastards<\/strong>\u2019, an example of the unmistakable fusion of indie rock and contemporary dance.<\/p>\n

The composer and choreographer Jacques Poulin-Denis<\/strong> combines dance, music and theatre in \u2018Running Piece<\/strong>\u2019, while the level zero of the dance Xavier Le Roy<\/strong>, among the pioneers of the anti-choreography, reinvents a solo that has become almost cult: \u2018Le Sacre du printemps<\/strong>\u2019.<\/p>\n

The Danish Mette Ingvartsen<\/strong> is the author of an “expanded choreography” where the body loses its usual dominant role: To come (extended)<\/strong>, with the choreographer performing on stage alongside Jan Ritsema, Bojana Cvejic, Xavier Le Roy, Boris Charmatz.<\/p>\n

For the two Italians, Francesca Foscarini and Irina Baldini<\/strong>, the perceptive sphere prevails over the technical virtue and the human feelings are key elements: Francesca Foscarini’s diptych is the ‘Vocation to Asymmetry and Animal<\/strong>‘, an absolute novelty. Irina Baldini is ‘\u00a07 ways to begin without knowing where to start<\/strong>‘, with which she revealed herself at the Biennale College – ‘Choreographers’ last year, and ‘Quite now’<\/strong> in absolute premiere.<\/p>\n

Choreography as a social experience, common space that performer and spectator model together: Faye Driscoll<\/strong> is for the first time in Italy with ‘Thank you for Coming’: ‘Attendance’<\/strong>, the first chapter of a series of works ‘made for and with the public’.<\/p>\n

Energy and expressive vitality come from another continent, from the Cape Verdean Marlene Monteiro<\/strong> Freitas, which the Biennale awards as a new talent with the Silver Lion<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Twelve dancers and musicians for ‘Bacchae – Prelude to a Purge<\/strong>‘ presented by Cape Verdean Marlene Monteiro Freitas, Silver Lion for Lifetime Achievements.<\/p>\n

In the world premiere at the Biennale, Solos et duos<\/strong> (temporary title) by Marie Chouinard<\/strong> is a retrospective work of about thirty solos and duets.<\/p>\n

Biennale College – Danza<\/h2>\n

Promoting new talents by offering them to work closely to the masters for the development of their creations. For the Biennale College two intensive courses<\/strong> are dedicated to the art of dance<\/strong> and the art of choreography<\/strong>; they aim at 15 selected dancers, from 18 to 23 years (8 Italians, 2 Australians, 1 Dutch, 1 Greek, 1 Israeli, 1 from Singapore) , who after three months of training and interpretation will be protagonists of the 24 Pr\u00e9ludes de Chopin by Marie Chouinard and in a new creation by Daina Ashbee, conceived for Biennale College (29 June).<\/p>\n

On July 1st three choreographers under 32<\/strong> will present three free and original creations of about 20 minutes. After a preparatory phase on the creative process of a master, this year is the one of Marie Chouinard; the three choreographers work toghether for six weeks on their creation with 7 professional dancers<\/p>\n

Some phases of the work of choreographers and dancers will be open to the public at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition.<\/strong><\/p>\n

12. International Festival of Modern Dance<\/strong>

The innovative Lions of Biennale Theatre go to RezzaMastrella and Anagoor<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Pure, crazy and brilliantly bright. This is how the performers Antonio Rezza and Flavia Mastrella<\/a> are defined, which the Biennial Theatre of Antonio Latella rewards with the Golden Lion Lifetime Achievement<\/strong> Award for the 46th International Theatre Festival 2018. Performer-author Rezza and artist-author Mastrella, have been on the scene since 1987, planning and signing innovative four-handed shows.<\/p>\n

The Silver Lion<\/strong> goes to the Castelfranco Veneto company Anagoor<\/a>, a collective laboratory<\/strong> between theatre, performing art, philosophy and hypermedia scene that since 2000 has developed a language “between the stuttering of barbarism and the crystalline splendour of the neoclassical”.<\/p>\n

The Lions will be presented on July 20th at the opening of the Festival<\/strong>. For the occasion, the Anagoor Company will present their absolute premiere Orestea – Agamemnon, Schiavi, Conversio. For RezzaMastrella a portrait through the most recent shows: 7 14 21 28, Fratto X, Anelante.<\/p>\n

46. International Theater Festival<\/strong>

The spotlights of the Lido of Venice are switched on for the Film Festival<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Knowledge and expansion of the international cinema in all its forms, freedom and dialogue, retrospectives and tributes to prominent personalities in the 75th Venice International Film Festival.<\/strong> Directed by Alberto Barbera<\/strong>, the Film Festival will take place at the Lido of Venice from August 29th to September 8th<\/p>\n

Golden Lion to the director David Cronenberg<\/strong>. Often referred to as one of the greatest and most influential directors in the world, Cronenberg has earned with his films the praise and appreciation of international critics. Overall, he received seven Golden Globe nominations and four Oscars. Regarding the recognition of the director, Alberto Barbera declared<\/p>\n

“Violence, sexual transgression, the confusion of real and virtual, the distorting role of the image in contemporary society, are some of the recurring themes that contribute to making him one of the most daring and stimulating cinematographers of all time, a tireless innovator of forms and languages<\/p>\n

75. International Film Festival<\/strong>

From Frank Zappa to technological artists. An increasingly pop music Biennale<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Crossing the Atlantic<\/strong><\/em> is the title of the 62nd International Festival of Contemporary Music<\/strong>, presented in Venice from September 28th to October 7th<\/strong>. A Festival, open to a “more current interpretation of the concept of modernity”, according to the thoughts of Director Ivan Fedele and dedicated to musical influences between Europe and the Americas. The Festival of Music will present 18 concerts for a total of 40 first performances: 18 absolute, 1 European and 21 Italian.<\/p>\n

To inaugurate the 62nd Festival there will be the masterpiece of Frank Zappa<\/strong> – The Yellow Shark, in full version with the 26 elements of the Ensemble Contemporary Music Park<\/strong> directed by Tonino Battista and the participation of vocalist David Moss.<\/p>\n

Considered the creative synthesis of Frank Zappa, The Yellow Shark is the expression of a musical thinking that freely crosses all genres, able to merge orchestral score and improvisation, experimental rock and academic avant-garde, performance and interpretive details.<\/p>\n

Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at Keith Jarrett<\/strong> who at the 62nd Festival will perform in front of the audience one of his legendary solos at the piano that made him famous<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

From rock to jazz and finally to Astor Piazzolla’s tango<\/strong>. In Venice there will be Marcelo Nisinman<\/strong>, composer, arranger, director and champion of the bandone\u00f3n for a new edition of the most famous opera-tango of Piazzolla, Maria de Buenos Aires.<\/p>\n

Sebastian Rivas, Leone d’Argento<\/strong> of the Festival, brings to the Aliados<\/em> Biennale in Venice, a multimedia work,<\/strong> with sounds, images and voices manipulated in real time. The work recalls the meeting that actually took place between Augusto Pinochet and Margaret Thatcher, the allies of the title at the time of the conflict for the Falkland Islands.<\/p>\n

In the list of the ten best bassists of all time according to Rolling Stone, Victor Wooten<\/strong> presents in European premiere his latest CD, Trypnotyx<\/em>, accompanied by drummer Dennis Chambers, session man with Scofield, McLaughlin, Santana, and saxophonist and flutist Bob Franceschini.<\/p>\n

On the side of music enriched and created by technological devices, concerts become theatre<\/strong> shows with interpreters-performers, scenic environments and installations. Thus Nidra by Giacomo Baldelli,<\/strong> conceived as a multisensory work,<\/strong> with pieces that reconnect art music to the subversive energy of rock, such as Trash TV Trance<\/em> by Fausto Romitelli or Vampyr!<\/em> by Tristan Murail.<\/p>\n

It also happens in ‘Le chant de la mati\u00e8re’ by Laura Bianchini <\/strong>and Michelangelo Lupone<\/strong>, who invent drums made of interactive membranes with a metal shaft capable of projecting the vibrations on a screen, thanks to the percussionist Philippe Spiesser.<\/p>\n

Still great show in the concerts dedicated to the double bass only: by Dario Calderone<\/strong>, interpreter of Ur, two double bass rites by Giorgio Netti in an amplified version that brings the audience close and then far away, immerses the viewer in the sound and in the instrument; by Florentin Ginot,<\/strong> which presents ‘Not Here’, where there is space for the four double basses, one for each music piece, exploring the full sound range of this instrument; by Charlotte Testu<\/strong>, who uses electronic devices to reinvent the instrumental technique of the double bass.<\/p>\n

Finally the duo cellos by Norman Adams <\/strong>and Nicola Baroni<\/strong>: in their concerts score, computational programming and execution lose their traditionally defined contours and the virtual sound emerges as an effective consequence of the actions that take place on stage.<\/p>\n

Applauded as the diva of avant-garde pianism, Margaret Leng Tan<\/strong> brings her concert to the Festival with music by Cowell, Cage, Crumb.<\/p>\n

The Haydn Orchestra<\/strong> conducted by Tito Ceccherini, the soprano Giulia Bolcato and the violinist Francesco D’Orazio are dynamic and high performing; the Ensemble Linea<\/strong>, founded in 1998 by the pianist and conductor Philippe Wurtz; the Mivos Quartet,<\/strong> founded in New York and interpreter of contemporary music; the string quartet Untref<\/strong>, one of the first ensembles in Argentina dedicated to music from the late twentieth century to the present day.<\/p>\n
