During the month of August, the city is presenting a calendar of theatre shows, movies at the open-air cinema, concerts in suggestive venues and locations to discover. Here is our selection of ten things to do in Venice during Summer 2019.
1 – Outdoor cinema in Campo San Polo and in the city | From 2nd to 25th August
The outdoor cinema returns to Venice! One of the summer most loved events by the Venetians (just after the ‘Festa del Redentore’) returns to Campo San Polo from 9 to 18 August, a convivial and popular way to enjoy Campo San Polo. Free access to 200 seats, space for those who want to bring their own “carega” (chair), and evergreen films set in the lagoon. The screenings will start at 9.15 pm, here is the complete program:

2 – Music and scents at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista | 9th and 30th August
San Giovanni Experience is a way to experience the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista as no one has yet imagined.
On Friday 9th and 30th August art, history and music come together in an original sensory perception during the visit of the Scuola Grande. The lay confraternity founded in 1261 houses important painting and sculpture masterpieces in its majestic Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque spaces. Contemporary soundtracks and melodies will be performed by the Movietrio group in Massari’s Capitolare Hall with an extraordinary acoustics. A fresh perfumed aperitif will follow.

3 – Biennale Teatro | Sunday 4th August 2019 6 pm
The 47th Venice Biennale International Theatre Festival directed by Antonio Latella brings to Venice shows and events with the most important protagonists of the contemporary theatre arena and productions made by Biennale College Teatro, the training project dedicated to young Italian directors.
At the Goldoni Theatre on Sunday 4th August at 6pm, the festival stages Die Hamletmaschine directed by Sebastian Nübling. The artistic co-director of the Gorki Theater in Berlin Jens Hillje will receive the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement in the ceremony that will take place before the show.
“A work that addresses the themes of feminism, oppression and brutality. Extremely complex, dense and associative, this nine-page text is inspired by William Shakespeare’s Hamlet. Sebastian Nübling and the Exile Ensemble dissect Müller’s text by adapting the themes to the ideas and tumults of the Syrian war “. (Jens Hillje)

4 – The rediscovery of the Harlequin at the Goldoni Theatre | from 7 to 31 August at 7pm
In a remote village in the Bergamo valleys, two lovers got married in great secrecy and they gave birth to a daughter, in the same days when Harlequin and Camilla were celebrating the birth of their first child.
Between exchanges of children and scenes of jealousy, unjust accusations and comic desperations, Harlequin son, lost and rediscovered, is the new show produced by the Teatro Stabile del Veneto. After two and a half centuries one of the most interesting Goldoni’s canvases is back again on stage.
At the end of the show, which lasts about an hour, the unmissable aperitif ritual will follow, where actors and audience can meet.
The show, translated and adapted by the director Marco Zoppello, presents an unusual Harlequin, not a servant but a cheesemaker, no longer a victim of the masters but the creator of his own destiny. Wearing the most famous mask in the world is Stefano Rota, accompanied by six young professional actors from the Youth Company of the Teatro Stabile del Veneto, born from the TeSeO – Theatre School and Employment project, supported by the Veneto Region.

5 – Instawalk | Tuesday 10th September, Venice
After the walk to discover the Biennale Arte 2019 there a new Instameet, with the community of Venetian Instagramers, that will make you discover the Carlo Goldoni Theatre, the stage and backstage and its protagonists. The show ends with an aperitif with Harlequin as the guest star.

6 – Jazz on the terrace on The Grand Canal
Women for Freedom in Jazz is the appointment with jazz music on the panoramic terrace of the Hotel Carlton On The Grand Canal. Jazz under the stars for an evening of music and talent. Admission is free with compulsory drink; the proceeds will support initiatives of the Women for Freedom organization towards women victims of violence, especially in Asia. The official hashtag is #womenforfreedominjazz.
7 – Discover Venice Arsenale with the Art Biennale and free tours on Mondays| until November 24th
May You Live In Interesting Time is the spectacular Biennale Arte 2019 curated by Ralph Rugoff. Summer may be the perfect time to visit it by taking a stroll through the Giardini, the extraordinary spaces of the Arsenale or by discovering the less known buildings that host collateral exhibitions.

The Biennale is also a unique opportunity to visit splendid Venetian palaces open for collateral events: here is an itinerary of the exhibitions and the palaces exhibitions and the palace.
Finally, not everyone knows that Biennale offers a free MONDAY STORICAL TOUR: every Monday you can participate to a free guided tour to learn about the history of the Arsenale. The tour does not require the purchase of the ticket to the exhibition because it does not include the exhibition spaces, and it is possible to book until 12.00 on the Saturday before the visit.

8 – Arsenal Under the Stars | Every Thursday from 8.00pm
The Institute of Maritime Military Studies offers free guided tours of the Venice Arsenal under the stars.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Association of Friends of the Venetian Museums and Monuments, offers the opportunity to admire the ancient Arsenal of the Venetian Navy with the beautiful light of the evening.

9 – To the Crociferi | Combo and artistic residences
The former convent of the Crociferi has become a young vibrant place, with a rich program of events offering tranquillity, relaxation and culture. A bar, a cafe, a restaurant, a bàcaro and much more are part of the Combo project that also manages the ancient convent organising concerts, cinemas, exhibitions, a residence for artists, chic markets and convivial events.
If you want to spend a slow and sunny Sunday Combo organizes excellent brunches from 10am to 3pm, every Thursday of August, and then there is Campo Combo, fantastic DJ sets in the Corte degli Aranci that will also host a Vintage Market accompanied by the sound of Grao dj set on Sunday 4th August.
Between July 20th and August 4th, the Durjoy Bangladesh Foundation invited eleven international artists to reflect on the question: Does life in these uncertain times of crisis and turbulence make art more interesting? The eleven participating artists are: Dhali Al Mamoon, Noor Ahmed Gelal, Dilara Begum Jolly, Uttam Kumar Karmaker, Rajaul Islam Lovelu and Kamruzzaman Shadhin from Bangladesh; Umut Yasat, Turkish / German, and David Dalla Venezia, Cosima Montavoci, Andrea Morucchio and Chiara Tubia from Venice, all invited by Caterina Corni and Laura Ammann.

10 – Cinema Exhibition | From 28 August to 9 September
The Lido of Venice will be crowded by great international guests thanks to the opening of the 76th Venice International Film Festival, organized by the Venice Biennale and directed by Alberto Barbera, scheduled from August 28th to September 9th, 2019.
The first news seems to point out that is going to be a memorable festival, with an epochal number of true divas and great actors: we will be at the Lido and we will tell you about our days between red carpet and photocall, press conferences, beach parties, night projections and many Cafés with Veneziadavivere, on the search for the perfect shot and unpublished interview.
