For #RiscrivereilFuturo, Lorenza Lain of Hotel Ca’ Sagredo and the Venice Hoteliers Association imagines a Venice that is open to the world but selective in its choices, rich with citizens and guests who live, breathe, and respect the city.

Vdv: How do you imagine Venice in the future?

In the future, I imagine it as it was in the recent past of the ’80s and ’90s, with less day-trip tourism and more “guests” who stay in hotels and live, breathe, and respect the city (without consuming it). A city where many people can return to live as Venetian residents.

Vdv: What can politics and citizens do for a rebirth of Venice?

Rather than a rebirth, I would call it a transformation: politics must provide a direction toward a city open to the world but selective in its choices, and citizens must continue to be “Venetian”—tenacious, positive, and supportive.

Vdv: Propose a specific idea in at least one of these areas: environment, housing, work, culture, security, tourism.

Strengthening the Department of Tourism and Culture, a department that must have a broad capacity to engage with local, regional, and national institutions, and dialogue with international key players. Furthermore, the Councilor for Tourism should be supported by a technical committee representing the city’s most important sectors, collaborating with those who coordinate events and manifestations from a strategic perspective.

For the project #RiscrivereilFuturo di Venezia, Venezia da Vivere and the Associazione Piazza San Marco interviewed entrepreneurs, curators, directors of cultural institutions, university rectors and professors, hoteliers, event organizers, and citizens who live and work in Venice. An open debate with the community to foster an idea of a city in balance with the environment, work, and its civitas.
