Ocean Space, the space dedicated to ocean conservation by TBA-21 Academy, brings the Church of San Lorenzo to life with performances and events
After nearly a century of closure, the Church of San Lorenzo is now the venue for international debate on the oceans and sustainability, thanks to the Thyssen-Bornemisza gallery, which created TBA21–Academy, a platform for discussion on ocean issues.

He is the most emblematic musician connected to nature: Jónsi of Sigur Rós presents in Venice the album produced by Dark Morph, his group with composer Carl Michael von Hausswolff. The album draws inspiration from the sounds of the Pacific and was produced at the Alligator Head Foundation, a scientific partner of TBA-21 Academy.
Not to be missed is the site-specific musical installation The So(ng)qe/Tovuto Kyrrahafið Sound Field, open to visitors from May 7 to June 30, 2019.

Concluding the “oceanic” program, on Saturday, May 11, from 3 to 4:30 PM, Territorial Agency. Oceans in Transformation – Overfishing, a workshop organized by Territorial Agency to create a network among artists and research groups committed to advancing concrete solutions for the future of the oceans.
What’s happening at San Lorenzo?
With the multimedia performance Moving Off The Land, artist, performer, and videomaker Joan Jonas, electronic music composer Ikue Mori, and performer Francesco Miglio on May 7 transformed the Church of San Lorenzo into a dreamlike universe between enchantment and reality, to affirm the importance of marine life.
Art, science, and Light in the Oceans
Wednesday, May 8, featured artist Olafur Eliasson, creator of the unforgettable Blind Pavilion at the Danish Pavilion of the 2003 Biennale and the light grid on the facade of Palazzo Grassi, in conversation with marine biologist David Gruber, Joan Jonas’s right-hand man in the creation of Moving Off The Land, while in the evening scientist Jeremy B.C. Jackson presented his theories on the oceanic world in a lecture alongside the performance by writer, singer, and sound artist LaTasha Nevada Diggs.
Alienation is the antidote to confronting the climate catastrophe according to the xenofeminist collective Laboria Cuboniks, which on May 9 expressed its revolutionary positions on climate change with a lecture-performance by its founders, writer Diann Bauer and University of West London professor Helen Hester.
