Walking in Venice around the area of San Polo offers you the chance to see wonderful monuments and seminal places of the history of art of the city. An extraordinary triangle links the Frari Church to the two Great Schools of San Rocco and San Giovanni Evangelista.
School is the word used in the time of the old Republic of Venice to identify a confraternity or a laical association of citizens who, inspired by the principle of Christian compassion, were voted to mutual material and spiritual aid. The Great School of San Giovanni Evangelista is the oldest of the Venetian Great Schools: built in 1261, the School is still open and is an important cultural and museum centre.
When you enter the School, after a campiello where the Church of San Giovanni Evangelista lies and after the old confraternity cemetery which is now called “Spazio Badoer”, art and exhibition centre, you’ll see the majesty of the XVI century staircase that leads to the upper floor.
The Salone Capitolare, a work by the great Venetian architect Giorgio Massari is absolutely elegant and light: insieme the splendid floor made of polychrome marbles and the canvases by famous Venetian painters like Domenico Tintoretto, Giandomenico Tiepolo and Pietro Longhi highlight the majesty of the space.
