Japanese artist Yusuke Akamatsu presents his solo exhibition of artworks and textiles at the Fondazione Donà dalle Rose in Venice, curated by the young duo Carlo Donà dalle Rose and Elisa Egger of Elica Art, with the contribution of Venetian Master Franco Puppato and his craftsmanship in men’s haute couture
Japanese artist Yusuke Akamatsu presents a solo exhibition in Venice curated by Carlo Donà dalle Rose and Elisa Egger of Elica Art. The exhibition showcases artworks and textiles, including the evocative Fuji Tsubaki Kimono. Featuring a special contribution by Franco Puppato.
Yusuke Akamatsu was born in Ibaraki, Osaka, in 1967 and resides in Paris. As an artist, he experiments with various forms of expression, including film, photography, literary storytelling, and painting. Akamatsu’s body of work emphasizes the need for human evolution aimed at global change that challenges its anthropocentric parameters. Through his art, Akamatsu invites us to rediscover our humanity through reflection and interaction.
The Japanese fashion house Fuji Tsubaki Kimono presents a collection in Venice designed by master Yusuke Akamatsu, featuring fourteen unique kimonos. After being paraded among the works of the Donà dalle Rose collection, they will become part of the exhibition curated by Elica Art with the Fondazione Donà dalle Rose in the Bias Gallery space inside the Palace, until October 7, 2023.
The exhibition and the fashion show testify to the union between art and the kimono, a symbolic garment of Japanese culture that originates from the Kosode, the garment worn by high-ranking women in the imperial court from the 8th to the 12th century in Japan.
The meaning of the Fuji Tsubaki brand is explained by its designer, Tsubaki Ito. The surname Ito is written with two characters, and the second character can also be read as “Fuji.” This is where the brand name “Fuji Tsubaki” comes from. “Fuji” means “wisteria flower,” while “Tsubaki” means “camellia flower.”
The fashion show for the brand Fuji Tsubaki, designed by the artist Yusuke Akamatsu, will be accompanied for the occasion by the music of Fusanosuke Kondo.
The guest of honor at the event is the Venetian tailor Franco Puppato, awarded Master of Arts and Crafts by the Cologni Foundation and winner of the Arbiter Prize in 2020. He will present his menswear, including a tuxedo created with a brocade from the ancient factory of the Donà dalle Rose family, “Donatus,” whose fabrics are depicted in Renaissance paintings in Venice and around the world.
