UWS is a six-episode graphic novel that will be published on the Lulu.com website starting from January 28, while the authors’ work-in-progress can be seen on the UWS website.
The Unitedwestand.it web-site represents the most innovative aspect of the whole project which shifts from paper to an online dimension. From January 7 2008 to January 9 2009 side stories, mp3 collections and picture galleries will be published on the UWS website every Monday.
Vladi Finotto (TEDIS researcher at the Venice International University) wrote the following on Firstdraft, a blog on competitiveness and innovation:

UWS represents the future of story-writing and of the publishing sector.

• The web seems to have changed the way writers work. Readers are required to move around, read a book, follow new episodes on the website, actively contribute to the development of the work that has been written or drawn on paper. This is a project involving different media.

• The Internet represents a hotbed for projects like UWS: features like publishing on demand (Lulu.com) and web promotion reduce start-up costs and represent a way of testing the potential market of a project.

• By testing the real promotional possibilities offered by the Internet, UWS hopes to investigate the role of blogs, information services and research engines in promoting publishing products. The results will be useful for the publishing sector in general.
