Throughout October, Venice is at the center of major events from design to regattas, theater, craftsmanship, and fashion. Major events for a city always at the heart of international cultures and essential themes such as sustainability and the future
The first event on the calendar is Venice Design Week, the Design Festival in Venice, organized by the cultural association Arte e Design Venezia in collaboration with Venetian institutions.
In its thirteenth edition, from October 1 to 9, Venice becomes a center for discussions and interpretations in the world of contemporary design, innovation, planning, and ideas between local and multicultural craftsmanship.
The 2022 theme ORIGINS is the key to a series of conferences (in-person and streaming) that highlights obstacles and opportunities in design, ranging from design fields on the environment, medicine, sustainability, and daily life to new technological languages, software, and developments in artificial intelligence.
The Tea Ceremony and Carlo Scarpa
The deep connection between the Venetian architect Carlo Scarpa and Japanese culture comes through the tea ceremony at the Negozio Olivetti del FAI in Piazza San Marco under the arcades of the Procuratie Vecchie.
On October 1 and 29 at 6:30 PM and 8:00 PM, after the guided tour of the Negozio Olivetti, you can experience a special moment: the meditative and religious ritual of the tea ceremony, led by master Senyo Machida.

It’s Jazz Time
Venezia Jazz Festival opens on October 1 with two events: Dialogue’s Delight at the Sale Apollinee of Teatro La Fenice with Olivia Trummer, the German pianist, composer, and singer (winner of the Jazz Award Baden-Württemberg) in duo with drummer Nicola Angelucci, and Verso Venezia with Antonio Fresa on piano at the Auditorium Lo Squero of the Fondazione Cini on the Island of San Giorgio Maggiore and tasting of three cocktails at San Giorgio Café, part of Venice Cocktail Week.
Through December 16, twenty performances are scheduled: from the city jazz club to Laguna Libre, workshops by Emmet Cohen and Larry Grenadier, collaboration with Candiani Groove for concerts in Mestre by João Bosco and Quintorigo, at the Auditorium Lo Squero.
This spectacular location hosts on October 15 the Band’Uniòn project composed of one of the most important Italian bandoneonists, Daniele di Bonaventura with Marcello Peghin (10-string guitar), Felice Del Gaudio (double bass), and Alfredo Laviano (percussion) in a project that embraces jazz, tango, and improvisation.

Teatro in Bottega Returns
Meet at the Colonnade of the church of San Francesco della Vigna on October 8 at 6:30 PM for Performance 10. Novelle in bottega, freely inspired by Giovanni Boccaccio’s Decameron, curated by Mattia Berto and Giorgia Chinellato.
A widespread event for the shops in the area as part of the Teatro in Bottega project that brings theater to the unusual spaces of Venetian shops and beyond: “It’s like an open-air scene – explains the director – we act in butcher shops, greengrocers, bookstores, cobblers, workshops, and city spaces with sudden actions that do not distort the place but use it as a privileged set.”

Friend Water
Be Water, My Friend is the title of the upcoming exhibition at Galleria Alberta Pane, from October 8 through December 23, 2022.
“Relational tensions, the exhibited works are like water, which is formless until it understands, and becomes the relationship toward which it tends.”
Curated by Chiara Vecchiarelli, the exhibition is a collective of six international artists: Luciana Lamothe, Jojo Gronostay, Eva L’Hoest, David Horvitz, Nicola Pecoraro, and Enrique Ramírez.
Donizetti at La Fenice
From October 14 to 22, Teatro La Fenice presents La fille du régiment, an opera among the finest operatic comedies of all time with music by Gaetano Donizetti and libretto by Jean-François-Alfred Bayard and Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges.
Set in the Tyrolean Alps, it tells the story of Marie, an intrepid foundling raised as a vivandière by a regiment of Napoleonic soldiers. When the man of her life is suspected as a spy, Marie must face war, the opposition of her many “fathers,” and even the discovery of being of noble origins to achieve her personal happy ending.
The premiere on Friday, October 14 will be broadcast live from 7:00 PM on Rai Radio 3.
60 Photographers for Venice Photo Lab
From October 14 to 23, the fourth edition of Venice Photo Lab will take place, an exhibition bringing together more than 60 photographers and artists from around the world, including internationally award-winning Paolo Verzone (photo in the article) and Eric Lafforgue.
Freedom is the title of the 2022 edition, and as curator Fabio Cavessago explains, “We asked ourselves whether freedom can be explained, and what it truly is. Photography represents in this sense a perfect investigative tool, being an art form that has often challenged univocal narratives, developing a new way of telling the world.”
Partner of Venice Fashion Week, Venice Photo Lab will be set up at the Unisve headquarters (Dorsoduro 3077). Admission is free from 10:00 AM to 6:30 PM.
The Regatta Weekend
Venice’s hotel excellence competes with sailing prowess for the Grand Prix of the City of Venice. Everyone ready Saturday, October 15 for the ninth edition of Venice Hospitality Challenge: the only regatta in the world reserved for maxi yachts and held in the internal waters of a city circuit.
Sunday October 16 is the turn of the 15th edition of the Veleziana regatta, organized by Compagnia della Vela. The only sailing event that allows racers to arrive under full sail in the basin of San Marco.
The Veleziana is a typical Venetian regatta and winds along a course that starts from the Adriatic Sea, in front of the Lido of Venice, passes through the Lagoon, and ends in front of Piazza San Marco.
Venice Fashion Week 2022
Tailored and sustainable fashion returns to Venice with Venice Fashion Week, from October 19 to 29.
Since 2013, the event, organized by Venezia da Vivere, has brought to Venice the debate on sustainable fashion and the invaluable value of art crafts with conferences, exhibitions, and events in which artisans, creatives, entrepreneurs, and designers are called to create scenarios to design the future.
Among the 2022 novelties, in addition to fashion shows, presentations by emerging and international designers, Atelier Aperti – routes open to the public to discover artisan ateliers on the weekend of October 22 and 23 – and a series of round tables, a salon dedicated to artisan accessories will open: Ornamenti, at Palazzo Sagredo, from October 26 to 28, with the intent of making visible the fashion supply chain in Venice and Italy.
Where Fashion Is Born
Nicolao Atelier, the Sartoria del Teatro La Fenice, and the Tessitura Luigi Bevilacqua are the venues chosen in Venice to be part of the national circuit of Apritimoda, the project born in 2017 from an idea by Cinzia Sasso and realized together with Eleonora Grigoletto, Lidia Pezzoni, Emma Pradella, Andrea Chisu, Mariavittoria Zaglio, and Marta Marcolin.
On the weekend of October 22 and 23, the public will be able to visit the places where creativity and Made in Italy tailored fashion originate.
Run for Venice
Preparations are underway for the thirty-sixth Venicemarathon which on Sunday, October 23, in addition to the 42K and 10K, will launch the new half marathon of the UYN Venice Half Marathon.
The marathon, recognized worldwide by the IAAF and certified Bronze Label, has a route that goes from Villa Pisani in the Riviera del Brenta, passing through the splendid villas of the area, to arrive in Venice, in Piazza San Marco.
Autumn Music Festival
Saturday, October 1 inaugurates at the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista the autumn festival Massenet, maestro del suo tempo organized by Palazzetto Bru Zane and dedicated to French composer Jules Massenet.
On October 2 at Palazzetto Bru Zane, the concert Farfalle nere, farfalle bianche with (piano) François Dumont. On October 13, the event is dedicated to mélodies with Tesori nascosti and the voice of Marie Gautrot. For opera enthusiasts, the dates are October 18 and 25 with the concerts In punta di pentagramma and Il violino danzante.
The festival will close on October 28 with a four-hand piano performance with the Geister Duo performing Sulle ali del pianoforte.

Chef Borghese in Venice
Through October 28, the contemporary art of Shape takes form in the new restaurant Il lusso della semplicità at Cà Vendramin Calergi by chef Alessandro Borghese.
On display are works by artist Alessandro Antonucci (his portrait of the chef), by Davide Serpetti, by Riccardo Gusmaroli, also present in Borghese’s Milan restaurant, by David Reimondo, and in the garden of the palace overlooking the Grand Canal by Francesco Di Luca.
