Discover a Venice of design with Design.Ve designwalks through the city’s districts

The festival DESIGN.VE curated by VeniceArtFactory starts at the same time of the Architecture Biennale opening. Meetings, exhibitions and DesignWalks throughout Venice to discover more than 80 independent designers, companies, museums, galleries and design schools.

The event, promoted by Generali Italia to enhance creativity and make it accessible to an increasingly wider public, finds its main place in the Design After Darwin exhibition. Adapted to Adaptability is at Palazzo Morosini Gatterburg, the historic headquarters of Generali Italia in Venice, which opens its doors for the first time to design with the #ValoreCultura project.

Another eighteen exhibitions are happening between 23rd May and 17th June in San Marco, Castello, Dorsoduro and Cannaregio; they are part of a wider project to be discovered also through the social networks thanks to the photographers and instagramers of the IgersVenezia community; hashtags #DesignVe and #BiennaleInstameet.

We can understand the meaning and soul of this event through the images of the photographer Mattia Balsamini, who has portrayed the creators of the project Francesca Giubilei and Luca Berta and other Venetians in everyday life situations, together with a piece of furniture or an iconic object. His way to declare that design is in everyone’s life

Design After Darwin. Adapted to Adaptability

Design is evolution and openness, adapts to the unpredictable and reinvents the rules. In one of the historic venues of Generali in Venice, the collective exhibit curated by Luca Berta, Francesca Giubilei and Alice Stori Liechtenstein addresses the themes of multiplicity, reconfiguration, recycling, transfiguration through which to interpret the works and create new relationships between objects and users.

Founded in 1947, the goal of Cedit-Ceramiche d’Italia is to export the art of ceramics and the Italian taste for interior architecture. These huge ceramic plates are transformed into canvases on which artists and designers can free their creativity.

The goal of Cedit is to give a voice and a space to the most daring artistic research for the most innovative design, continuing to establish new partnerships with designers and contemporary artists, such as Zaven, Formafantasma, Zanellato / Bortotto, Giorgio Griffa and Franco Guerzoni

The exhibition, organized by the Government of Moscow in collaboration with the Industrial Designers Club, proposes the reconstruction of a contemporary library. Currently, over 48,000 public libraries are open and active in Russia. Libraries have always been the heart of the communities that host them. They are places where it is possible to store large amounts of knowledge and information, where the cultural and country borders are transcended.

Today these places are going through a critical time: the places and the way in which people access information have changed and this has created a great challenge to those (authorities, designers and architects) who have to reconsider the role and the shape of our libraries.

Our need for aggregation, exchange and comparison has not changed. Reflecting on this theme the participating designers have designed their own ideal library.

With a continuous exhibition experimentation, the Marignana Arte project room houses the work of a descendant of the Venini glass dynasty, founded in Murano in 1921 by the grandfather Paolo Venini. Quoting Hugo Von Hofmannstahl, in the art works created by de Santillana, the patina of the past blends with the sparkle of the present.

In fact in his works he uses the ancient technique for the manufacture of flat window glass; the artist intervenes while the glass is still “hot”, shaping the material and applying patinas capable of transforming the transparency of glass into dense and absorbing works. Works of strong material imprint, consistent and powerful works that are impacting the space: the opposite of the fragile and ethereal image of glass.

This time the windowsill takes an unprecedented form, claiming new features. No longer and not exclusively a privileged place to observe and find inspiration for painting, it also becomes a strategic point for a photo shoot or a selfie to be posted on Instagram.

VENICE INNOVATION DESIGN – VID

The Island of San Servolo has a Congress Centre and a hospitality structure immersed in one of the largest green parks in the city and it has become the permanent residency of the Venice Innovation Design project; the centre’s spaces and the park are open to Italian design companies that can design and implement innovative interventions. In this way the island becomes a design-in-progress laboratory, a multifunctional platform on which to apply innovation and the skills of the Made in Italy. The companies that in 2018 have permanently redesigned and customized the spaces of the Island are: Aresline, Attico, Cosentino, Fimes, Lago, LCF, Oikos, Tosetto, Vistosi.

 

SISMIK

The inspiration from which to the SISMIK project has been created is a spark of imagination, a burst of thoughts. SISMIK is the dynamic human nature within each individual; it is the desire to travel through the universes and to embark on a journey of dialogue, communication and exchange.

SISMIK is also the land, complete with lines of fragmentation, traces left by the oceanic and terrestrial explosive energy. As these rifts, all united into a single one, we as individuals possess the willingness to reunite and meet, moving like the tectonic plates beneath us. It is this sense of individuality and community that has brought these artists together.

Fabienne is the vibrating movement. Christophe is the intense volcanic energy, Romain is the telluric force, Astrig is the foundation and the essential link between the artists. The artists met in Venice, a city united by aquatic fractures, to present the artistic realization of a project that travels along the history of the Serenissima.

 

ESTONIAN DESIGN HOUSE

A network that connects Estonian designers from different sectors and multidisciplinary skills, offering creative and innovative solutions for product design and starting an exchange process and collaboration between designers and entrepreneurs.

The pop-up shop selection presented in Venice introduces a natural, eco-friendly and affordable design. More than 100 Estonian designers are represented by the Estonian Design House and its online platform www.estoniandesignhouse.ee.

 

WallpaperSTORE

For its official launch in the lagoon WallpaperSTORE * has collaborated with the duo of Venetian designers Zanellato / Bortotto. The imagined environment is a tribute to Venice and its recurrent and apocalyptic high water syndrome.

The exhibition project relies on the involvement of the local De Castelli brand, an excellence in the field of metal working: overlaying oxidations applied on brass, copper and iron to create stratified, almost watercolour effects that remind us of the reflections on the water. The STORE* will be run by young Venetian students who will offer explanations and information on the design objects on display, on Venice and the possible routes to discover the beauties of the city.

Nothing will actually be available for purchase, because everything can be conveniently purchased on the online store.wallpaper.com online platform. The space in Via Garibaldi will host premieres and limited edition pieces of some of the best design partners for Wallpaper: Minimalux, Salvatori, Venini, La Chance, L’Objet, Michael Anastassiades, NasonMoretti, etc…

 

WHY-WHAT-WHO / 10 YEARS OF FASHION ARTEFACTS

W-W-W is the exhibition organized by the London College of Fashion and curated by the course leader Dai Rees to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the innovative post-graduate course in “Fashion Artefact”. The aim of the project is to show how fashion is one of the most influential forms of expression in our contemporary culture, a reflection of our social behaviour. In this exhibition project, involving 21 former students and 3 members of the LCF, the “fashion artefact” is a post-modern metaphor of what is happening in today’s society. The four research areas investigated by the designers are: heritage and craftsmanship, the performing body and the prosthesis, the product and manufacture, and finally the artefact as a political voice.

Animal Spirits, with the creative direction of Mali Weil (Elisa Di Liberato, Lorenzo Facchinelli and Mara Ferrieri) is an art-based brand that creates customizable products in limited edition, experiences and mythologies with a strong narrative and symbolic function.

In a private Venetian interior, he presents Aphrodisia, his latest capsule collection, where each piece of the collection constitutes a fragment of narration in which spaces, rituals and private actions belonging to the house become occasions for enhancing the body and the political imagination (‘political’ here means belonging to the ‘polis’, to the community).

Animal Spirits integrates the research on design with the artistic one through performance and political consideration, developing the idea of a “performing object”: an object able to mix practical and narrative function and to prolong, in the life of its owner, the ephemeral time of the performance with which it is presented.

 

KOSMOGONO – Come Into New State of Being

Following the successful collaboration at the Salone del Mobile 2018, WonderGlass and Studiopluz present an exhibition that creates a world inspired by the wonders of the universe seen through glass prisms. Housed inside the iconic Church of the Ospedale, the exhibition combines glass with sound and light to let the visitor enquire on how a modern city could be and how the universe can stimulate design.

Kosmogono, a series of glass works inspired by the deep space and the emotions experienced by looking at the night sky, and Horah, a lighting installation designed by the duo Raw Edges of London, will offer a convivial show.

Cannaregio district

INFINITE VILLAGE

A single modular structure describes a spatial situation rather than manifesting itself as a volume: Infinite Village is the continuation of the collaborative artistic project UN_SPACED, started by the artists Cora von Zezschwitz and Tilman Hoepfl in 2017. Interventions with fabrics and other inexpensive materials suggest an idea of home and social activities that underline the interdependence between the work of art, the architecture and the perception of a space meant as openness, reflection and dialogue.

The work is visually and conceptually understood as an open structure and functions as an autonomous work of art, a sculptural or architectural intervention and an investigation into the spatial perception.

 

AMM – FURNITURE BY ARCHITECTS INSTITUTE OF SPATIAL DESIGN – GRAZ UNIVERSITY OF TECHNOLOGY

The Institute of Spatial Design together with the architect Irmgard Frank present, in Venice, a selection of objects : amm – furniture by architects | architektinnen machen möbel, the result of the product design seminar that took place at the Faculty of Architecture of the Graz University of Technology. The students’ collection, under the guidance of an interdisciplinary team of experts in woodworking, reflects the multidisciplinary approach of the school.

This year the products will be launched on the market with their own brand: three stools, three chairs, a bench and a dining table interrogate users on the new functions and needs of the contemporary people. Sensual objects to touch, to feel, to use – far from a conventional lifestyle.

O> S stands for Open Space, but also Open Source, Open Studio, Open System. Open space, both physical and organizational, created by a production agency together with two research and production studios, for the sound and scenic design, located in a former carpentry workshop – it is an artisan shop and now also a place for contemporary creativity crafts.

 

2.73 PROTOTIPO DI CASA PER RESIDENTE RESILIENTE

A project for Venice and its resilient residents. The data referring to the average stay in the Historical City (2016 Tourism Yearbook) becomes a pretext for carrying out a wider reflection on living in Venice. 2.73 is a civic design project based on the principles of hospitality, collective intelligence and digital fabrication. 4 weekends / 4 short stay to outline a prototype (permanent Beta version) of a home for resilient residents starting from a schedule of activities defined by the invited guests themselves. The apartment with a micro outdoor cinema will be set up with four devices / design projects made using digital manufacturing techniques.

 

Forte Marghera

FORT INTEMPORAL

The site-specific project of environmental rehabilitation by the artist Wendy Kroch- mal and by the architect Bobby Fogel for Forte Marghera, a former nineteenth-century fortress, is part of the lagoon’s defensive system.

A few kilometres away from the historic centre of Venice, in the ruined, no roof building n. 29, Krochmal and Fogel decided to reinforce all the fractures of the wall structure using the ancient Japanese technique of the Kintsugi. In this ancient Japanese art the golden lacquer is used to emphasize the imperfections, repairs and seams, which thanks to these characteristics define an object or, in this case, a place, making it unique.

At Fort Intemporal the golden lacquer of the Kintsugi was replaced by a mixture of fragments of topaz and golden Murano glass, set in the cracks in the building floor and walls. The noble colour of the glass emphasizes the fissures, without trying to repair them.
