“How will we live together?” This is the title of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, a real call to action for the community.
There are new dates for the 17th International Architecture Exhibition, presented live from the Venice Biennale: from 29th August to 29th November 2020. The vernissage will take place on 27th and 28th August 2020 and the award and inauguration ceremony will be on October 29th, 2020.
The Venice Biennale outgoing President, Paolo Baratta, has explained how the exhibition has developed so far and how architecture is now considered a discipline that brings social benefits.
“Hashim Sarkis’s exhibition, Baratta continues, widely captures the structural problems of the contemporary society; he observes, and we do too, that in the whole world, phenomena of intense change are underway, very different from each other but yet connected by a need for important “adjustments” in the conditions of living. Here architecture becomes the point of reference of a vast interdisciplinary, cultural and political commitment.”
“In an era in which we feel no longer being the leaders of a spreading progress but being the victims of the changes that come with it, it seems useful to have a Bienniale that reminds everyone that the identity of either a company or a community lies in the quality of the projects that they are capable of creating for their future.”
At the end the President focuses his thoughts on the public and on a call for the community.
“In addition to being an instrument of knowledge and dialogue for professionals, the Architecture Exhibition is also a ‘call’ to the public to become accurate visitors, direct witnesses, eyewitnesses.” – and with regards to the role of the curator – “It is not enough to spread the knowledge but it is necessary to contribute to awareness, it is not enough to reveal problems, but it is necessary to feed the desire for Architecture with examples of proposals and achievements.”
These are the same objectives of the 17th International Architecture Exhibition Curator, Hashim Sarkis, who during the press conference explained that “the architects invited to participate in the 2020 Architecture Biennial have been encouraged to involve in their researches other professionals and groups: artists, builders, craftsmen, but also politicians, journalists, sociologists and ordinary citizens. The 2020 Architece Biennale wants to affirm the essential role of the architect, who is that of an affable convener and a custodian of the space agreement.
“The title, “How will we live together?”, represents what Baratta has said: to look for an answer to the needs, by involving the community.
During the conference Sarkis analyzed every single words in the title demonstrating how each of them has a strong symbolic value.
How – introduces a question that implies an answer.
Will – Future time, the direction towards which the progress is taking us.
We – it’s a question that involves everyone.
Live – expresses life through architecture.
Together – reinforces the collective idea.
? – Confirms that there is an open question, it is not rhetoric, and therefore we need solutions.
The curator concluded by saying that: “More than ever, architects are called to offer alternatives. As citizens, we commit our synthesis ability to bring people together around solving complex problems. As artists, we challenge the immobility that derives from the insecurity of asking “What would happen if?”. And finally, as builders, we draw from the depths of our inexhaustible optimism. The convergence of roles in these nebulous times can only make our mission stronger and, hopefully, our architecture more beautiful. ”
The exhibition will be divided among the Central Pavilion at the Giardini, the Arsenale and Forte Marghera, including 114 contestants from gf.
The 17th International Architecture Exhibition entitled How will we live together? will be open to the public from 29th August to 29th November 2020.
The vernissage will take place on 27th and 28th August 2020.
The award and inauguration ceremony will take place on 29th October 2020.
