A Day at the Theater
September 10, 2019 – from 5:00 PM
Teatro Goldoni, Venice
Photographing an empty theater is an experience many photographers desire. The velvet boxes overlooking the silent auditorium, the shadows of the backstage, the abandoned equipment. And then the theater comes alive with stagehands and the lights turn on. This time, however, the spectator-reporters will have an unprecedented role, on stage.
The Teatro Stabile del Veneto presents at the Goldoni The Misadventures of Harlequin, a summer series of two Commedia dell’Arte scenarios written by Carlo Goldoni during his French period: Harlequin’s Son Lost and Found, in Venice from September 3 to 22, and Harlequin and the Magic Ring, returning in October. The series, directed by Marco Zoppello, is an original project produced by Teatro Stabile del Veneto and designed for an international audience as well: in addition to the introduction of English and French surtitles, with its masks and gestures Commedia dell’Arte speaks to audiences from around the world.
Harlequin, the legendary mask of Italian theater, is performed on the stage of Teatro Goldoni by Stefano Rota with six young professional actors from the Young Company of Teatro Stabile del Veneto, born from the project TeSeO – Theater School and Employment with the support of the Veneto Region.
Harlequin’s Son Lost and Found
In a remote village in the valleys of Bergamo, a couple of lovers, Rosaura and Florindo, marry in great secrecy and give birth to a daughter, at the very same time that Harlequin and Camilla celebrate the birth of their firstborn.
Amid misunderstandings and infant exchanges, the plot soars on Harlequin’s jealous scenes and Camilla’s crises, unjustly accused of betrayal by her husband and desperate over the fate of a daughter she believes has disappeared.
The play of misunderstandings, typical of Commedia dell’Arte, brings to the stage the universal conflicts that animate human life: the thirst for power, for money, obstructed love, the green monster of jealousy. And within the entertainment hides a grain of black soot, an ember of drama ready to flare up among the brambles of life.
