Awaiting the major events of April with the Biennale Arte, Homo Faber, the opening to the public for the first time in 500 years of the Procuratie Vecchie, the openings of the artisan workshops Atelier Aperti, and much more, here are the appointments for March 2022.
Plessi at the Magazzini del Sale
Leading the way for the Venice Spring is the exhibition Plessi. Trilogy at Magazzino 3 at the Zattere, open to the public until April 3, 2022. The exhibition by the Venice Academy of Fine Arts celebrates the pioneer of Italian video art, Fabrizio Plessi, and his collaboration with director and choreographer Frédéric Flamand for the shows The Fall of Icarus (1989), Titanic (1992), and Ex-Machina (1994).
The tribute to the Master was initiated by the curators and professors of the School of Scenography and Stagecraft of the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, Lorenzo Cutùli and Nicola Bruschi, and is accompanied by the exhibition Plessi. Academic Drawings in the Anatomy Rooms of the Academy, featuring works by the artist when he was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts.
Palazzo Fortuny Reopens
Wednesday, March 9, 2022 sees the reopening of Palazzo Pesaro degli Orfei, better known as Palazzo Fortuny, the spectacular Venetian Gothic residence that belonged to the creative genius Mariano Fortuny y Madrazo and his wife, who was his muse and artistic partner, Henriette Nigrin.
The restoration and redesign of the artist’s house-atelier is the result of the genius of master Pier Luigi Pizzi with Gabriella Belli and Chiara Squarcina.
Accessible year-round with a permanent itinerary and as an exhibition venue for contemporary art, the palace is open free of charge to the public on Saturday, March 12 and Sunday, March 13, 2022 from 10 AM to 5 PM, by booking on the MUVE website.
La Fenice for Venetians
During the week from March 10 to 17, 2022, the Teatro La Fenice is promoting its performances with reduced ticket prices for residents. From 10 to 25 euros for four operas: I lombardi alla prima crociata by Giuseppe Verdi, La Griselda by Antonio Vivaldi, Scipione nelle Spagne by Antonio Caldara, and Peter Grimes by Benjamin Britten.
Sabine Weiss at the Casa dei Tre Oci
Curated by Virginie Chardin, The Poetry of the Instant opens on March 11 (until October 23, 2022) at the Casa dei Tre Oci. It is the largest retrospective ever realized—featuring more than 200 photographs, some previously unpublished—on the Franco-Swiss photographer Sabine Weiss, who passed away just days before the end of 2021.
The Electronic Music of Nu Fest
Electronic and experimental music from Saturday, March 19 to Saturday, May 7 in art spaces with Nu Fest, the festival of electronic and contemporary music in collaboration with VenetoJazz. The poetry and experimental rock of Anne-James Chaton and Andy Moor, the folk jazz of Erlend Apneseth, and the sonic and visual explorations of Franck Vigroux meet in a free-entry program (reservation required) across three evenings: at the Teatrino di Palazzo Grassi and at T Fondaco dei Tedeschi.

Kiefer at the Doge’s Palace
“These writings, when they are burned, will finally cast a little light”. With the words of the Venetian philosopher Andrea Emo, Anselm Kiefer brings his artistic gesture to Venice from March 26 to October 29, 2022: a cycle of paintings created for the Doge’s Palace during 2020 and 2021.
In the unique space of the Sala dello Scrutinio, Kiefer dialogues with the thirty-three monumental canvases on the ceiling and with the heroic significance of the entire decorative cycle of the Palace. In this instance, Venice is at the center of a research project, commissioning one of the greatest living artists to reflect on the role of contemporary art in addressing universal themes.
Marlene Dumas at Palazzo Grassi
At Palazzo Grassi, preparations are underway for the installation of Open-End, the monographic exhibition of South African artist Marlene Dumas, which will open to the public on Sunday, March 27, 2022 and run until January 8, 2023.
The exhibition, part of the program dedicated to major contemporary artists, is curated by Caroline Bourgeois and the artist herself, and features more than 100 works including paintings and drawings, some previously unseen, from 1984 to the present.
Continuing at Punta della Dogana until November 27, 2022, is the exhibition Bruce Nauman: Contrapposto Studies by one of the fathers of performance art. Watch our Instagram Stories.
March is Venice Fashion Week
Venice Fashion Week 2022 – Spring Edition: from March 23 to 26, fashion is in Venice with the event that highlights and promotes emerging talents and Venetian craftsmanship.
The future is artisanal: under the patronage of the City of Venice and Homo Faber, and dedicated to craftsmanship, sustainability, and high fashion, Venice Fashion Week is a contemporary narrative of the métier d’art. The opening event will be in the splendid Music Room of Palazzo Sagredo on Wednesday, March 23 with fashion designers and experts in craftsmanship and sustainable fashion.
The first fashion show of Venice Fashion Week is just steps away from Palazzo Fortuny and is dedicated to the woman who designed the Delphos gown: Henriette Nigrin, wife and muse of Mariano Fortuny.
On the historic Terrace of the Hotel Bonvecchiati, the evening gowns of the brand Mine de Rien by designer Francesca Venuti bring the concept of handmade pleating into the future with unique volumes and geometries.
Thursday, March 24 Venice Fashion Week is at the Boutique Hotel Corte di Gabriela, a nineteenth-century Venetian palace, for an appointment with the sartorial fashion of Atelier23 and MyssDuval.
Friday, March 25 Palazzo Sagredo and Venezia da Vivere present Being Luisa, the collection created by Finnish designer Jasmin Santanen and Atelier Martina Vidal, guardian of the art of Burano Lace. Dedicated to Marchesa Luisa Casati, the collection will be on display from Saturday, March 26 until April 5, 2022 at the Magazzino Gallery of Palazzo Polignac.
The project is under the patronage of the Embassy of Finland in Italy and lays the foundation for a collaboration on the themes of fashion, craftsmanship, and sustainability.
