#BiennaleCinema2023: everything about the side events of the 2023 Film Festival featuring red carpets, zero-waste garments, and sustainable parties in iconic locations, such as the Hotel des Bains and Giorgio Armani’s One Night Only show at the Arsenale
Essential ingredients of Film Festivals are fashion and glamour. Opening the festivities of the eightieth edition will be the traditional Variety party on August 29, organized on the terrace of the Hotel Danieli for the fourteenth edition of the American magazine’s Stars over Venice, A Lovely Night, with guest of honor the festival’s godmother Caterina Murino.
Dedicated to jury president Damien Chazelle and his Oscar-winning film La La Land, during the evening a new cocktail Mia Passione created by barman Roberto Naccari will be presented.
Also on August 29, the Bookciak, Azione! 2023 award will be presented in the Sala Laguna at the Lido with Nichi Vendola as jury president. A pre-opening event for Giornata degli Autori which for its twelfth edition pays tribute to Citto Maselli and screens the winning book-ciaks of the competition consisting of creating a short film inspired by novels, stories, and graphic novels.
The celebrations will then continue on Riva di Corinto at the Lido at Isola Edipo, a magical place with a lagoon view that combines ethical zero-kilometer gastronomy, the territory and its inhabitants, with the world of international art and culture of the Film Festival.
The rebirth of Des Bains
After a 13-year wait, like a Venetian Brigadoon, the Hotel Des Bains reopens for one night on August 30. On the Desbains1900.com beach every day parties, DJ sets, dinner shows, and film screenings. We are thrilled about the presentation (finally!) on the evening of September 4 at 9 PM of the short film La donna della Barena by our dear Alessandro Russo, a Venetian director.
Red Carpet is the event organized by Campari on Friday, September 1 to celebrate with splashes of red this historic location on the Lido waterfront, a source of inspiration for great literary and cinematic works, the set of director Luchino Visconti’s film Death in Venice.
Ciao Casanova
Sold out for Ciao Casanova, the multisensory concert supported by Cartier on Saturday September 2 at 8:30 PM at Teatro La Fenice.
A visual and musical performance by conductor, musician, and director Solrey, performed by Traffic Quintet, a pioneering ensemble that combines music and video art and accompanied by harpist Sylvain Blassel and mezzo-soprano Brenda Poupard, in which the classical scores of Mozart and Vivaldi dialogue with the contemporary ones by Nino Rota, John Williams, and Alexandre Desplat, and are amplified with the projection of images extracted from cult films.

From fashion shows to red carpets around the world, through films. Giorgio Armani returns to Venice on Saturday, September 2 at the Arsenale with One Night Only Venice: a project that has already touched some of the world’s most important cities, London in 2006, Tokyo in 2007, Beijing in 2012, Rome and New York in 2013, Paris in 2014, and Dubai in 2021.
For the fashion show of his haute couture line Armani Privé, the designer will organize a party on Friday, September 1 at the Guggenheim Museum with selected guests, a return to the lagoon born in 1990 with the world premiere presentation of the documentary film Made in Milan directed by the great director Martin Scorsese.
The event will also involve Armani Beauty, main sponsor of the festival for the sixth consecutive year. The Armani Group has also stated that it will offset all residual greenhouse gas emissions related to the event by supporting environmental projects in the lagoon, particularly with the non-profit organization We are here in Venice.
A red carpet to talk about sustainability
On Thursday, September 7, cinema meets sustainable fashion and fine craftsmanship with actress Margot Sikabonyi who, as part of the A Dress for Venice project, will walk the red carpet in a tailored gown made of biodegradable fibers and Burano lace, created by an international team of designers, artisans, and businesses.
The project, now in its third edition, will be presented at the Hotel Excelsior on September 7 at 12:30 PM as part of the Veneto Region program by councilor Elena Donazzan, founders Lorenzo Cinotti and Laura Scarpa, and the collection’s creators, eco-designer Tiziano Guardini and artist Jacopo Ascari.
A Dress for Venice is a capsule collection made with biodegradable fibers from the Japanese company Bemberg™ by Asahi Kasei and produced by the historic company Martina Vidal Venezia which has been creating Burano lace for four generations. The project is supported by a supply chain of companies identified by the Veneto Fashion Board (Confartigianato, Cna, Confindustria, Confesercenti, and Confcommercio of Veneto) and the global platform C.L.A.S.S. (Creativity Lifestyle and Sustainable Synergy).
The collection will then be presented at Venice Fashion Week, in Venice from October 19 to 28, 2023.
Art and young talent at the Campari Lounge
For three years it has become an essential appointment to discuss cinema and new talent: at the center of Campari initiatives on September 5 at the Campari Lounge on Terrazza Biennale, MI HUB Agency presents the Next Generation Awards powered by MANINTOWN, a project that underscores the magazine’s commitment to scouting new talent in the world of cinema and creativity.
Seven are this year’s award winners, including breakthrough actors and actresses and very young talents:
– Best breakthrough actors: Mattia Carrano, Domenico Cuomo, Andrea Dodero and Sebastiano Pigazzi
– Best breakthrough actresses: Lea Gavino and Fotinì Peluso
– Special Award: Daniele Giannazzo
– Ciak Generation Special Award: Domenico Cuomo
The award winners will be featured in Cover Stories in the magazine’s next print issue, coming out for the Rome Film Festival in mid-October. The award was created by illustrator Jacopo Ascari, who combined his passion for architecture with art and fashion, creating 7 artworks in which the portraits of the winners merge with iconic Venice locations.
Charity galas in Venice
Diane von Furstenberg‘s evening will be held on the island of San Giorgio on Thursday, August 31 from 7:30 PM, for the fourteenth edition of the DVF Awards which honor activist and extraordinary women who dedicate themselves to improving the lives of other women.
This year’s edition honors Amal Clooney for her work defending victims of human rights abuses around the world; the United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina J. Mohammed; Helena Gualinga for her work defending the environment and human rights; the world expert on the implications of artificial intelligence Joy Buolamwini and actress Lilly Singh.
Guests at the Venice DVF Awards: American singer-songwriter Jewel, Nobel Peace Prize-winning journalist Maria Ressa and Speaker Emerita of the U.S. House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi.
AmfAR also returns on September 3, at the Misericordia with a concert by Rita Ora and Leona Lewis, a gala dinner in honor of director Ava DuVernay and an auction of contemporary artworks to raise funds for AIDS research.
Award for Italian cinema
Personalities such as Aldo, Giovanni and Giacomo, Alessandro Siani and also Oscar winners Dante Ferretti and Francesca Lo Schiavo will be among the winners of the Filming Italy Best Movie Award, on September 3 at the Hotel Excelsior.
Fifth edition of an award given to films, television series, and talent from the latest film season established by Tiziana Rocca and Vito Sinopoli with actress Laura Chiatti as godmother of this new edition.
Kinéo Award at Ca’ Sagredo
The historic Kinéo Award by Rosetta Sannelli, supported by the DGCA of the MIC, will be held on Saturday, September 2 in the splendid setting of Hotel Ca’ Sagredo.
Hosting the awards ceremony will be actor Fabio Fulco, chosen by Franco Zeffirelli for Tea with Mussolini, who will be accompanied by the godmother of the twenty-first edition, Mexican actress Ana de la Reguera.
Among the announced awards: the Human Rights Award to Chiara Tilesi, an Italian director and producer currently residing in Los Angeles, engaged in the field of social change through art, media, and cinema, and the Solidarity Award given to Marta Miniucchi for creating a documentary on the work of the Italian NGO CEFA (European Committee for Training and Agriculture).
For the centenary of the birth of one of the greatest Italian intellectuals of the twentieth century, Kinéo has announced the Award to MG Production producer Morena Gentile for the creation of the documentary Pier Paolo Pasolini – A New Vision directed by Giancarlo Scarchilli, made in collaboration with Luce Cinecittà, Rai Cinema, and the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia.

On September 1 at 7:30 PM at the The Human Safety Net house at the Procuratie Vecchie in Piazza San Marco, the Impact Award will be held, an evening to celebrate directors who tell stories capable of creating impact.
Also on September 1 at the Indigo Hotel Venice Sant’Elena, Beyond The Rules & Magazine will hold the Charity Cocktail in support of the De Marchi Foundation for scientific research and the treatment of children with cancer. An event featuring music, shows, and cocktails with special guests including Alberto Fortis and Nikita.
And also on Friday, September 1 at 6 PM on Terrazza Biennale, Catalyst Studios presents Onore alle Donne.
